can anyone tell me how can tell if my ac unit is dry or just not working?
when i turn it on doesnt blow cold air.
I bought the truck and tried the ac in the summer so i was just thinking about it today, how can i tell if its just news to be fulled or is there a leak,?
So can anyone tell how i can figure out whats wrong it?
Does the compressor spin at all when you turn the AC on? Or, when the engine isn't running and with the key in the "run" position, do you hear a click under the hood when you move the lever from Vent to Max or Normal?
If the compressor spins at all or if you hear a click when you move the lever, there is enough refrigerant in the system to bring the pressure up above 30 psi. And, that means there isn't a big hole in the system and it probably can be recharged.
HOWEVER, most systems will not come on below a certain temp. So, depending on your outside temp when you try it, this may not be true. The better check is to put a set of gauges on it and find out how much pressure is in the system - both before trying to bring it on and then during.
Your compressor should come on not only on A/C normal or max, but also on defrost. My guess is it is either has a bad compressor or is low on freon. The A/C compressor if the system is working proper will come on at -30 below zero. The thing that controls the compressor is PRESSURE. There is a low pressure switch on the filter/drier there are two wires connected to it. To see if the compressor is working but just low on freon you can jump the wires on the low pressure switch. But don't run it very long that way. Because if the system is out of freon it is most likely low on oil & you can damage compressor. But the compressors on these years are known for Black Death. Go to ACKITS.COM & there is an article on what black death is. They are the best price & place to buy A/C parts. I just bought a new compressor, & drier from them because of black death on my 86 F250 4x4. I hold an ASE & Type I & II EPA Refrigeration Certs.
Before you jump the low pressure plug as Craig recommends above, make sure you have voltage at the light green/purple wire at the low pressure plug. If you don't have the voltage there, the compessor clutch won't cycle, and you may think the compressor is the problem.
