I've got a 67 F250 with the FMX auto trans which is leaking all over the place. Wondering what the general thought is of fixing up the FMX for a little $ or just replacing it with a C6 for more $. Is the FMX worth doing anything to it? The truck only has 51K miles but it has sat many years and has worn out gaskets.
The FMX is a sturdy tranny, but the C6 reputation is awesome. you may be able to find and rebuild a C6 for what it takes to rebuild the FMX. The C6 is used more frequently, especially in high torque applications like drag cars.
You can purchase a warrantied, rebuilt C6 from Jeg's for around $800. Get a quote on your FMX rebuild and compare.
I'm not sure if there is enough difference in the length to necessitate a drive shaft modification., I would guess not, but you might have to relocate the transmssion x-member.
I have a nice non-leaking FMX that will be available as soon as I get my 4 spd installed. Heck it's the only thing that DONT leak on the truck. Valve covers, front seal, pinion seal....blah, blah, blah . It's has 108,000 miles on it, but works great(I think someone has installed a shift kit somewhere along the line.) Or maybe they all shift like this.
