Can you acheive the same sound from either brand? I know they won't be exactly, but will they be close? Also will a dynomax be loud with high flow cats? I ask this because one of the exhuast shops in my town only sells dynomax mufflers. I can always by own flowmasters for him to put on but if they are close i will just get dynomax.

Are you talking about Dynomax Ultraflow or Dynomax Super-Turbo? One is straight through and the other makes a sorta "S" shape. The SuperTurbo is quieter.

I have a Flowmaster (Dronemaster more like it) on my F-150 and am really sick of it. I have decided on a Magnaflow 12588. 3" in and dual 2.5" out. 22" case lenght and 11" wide or so. It is pretty mellow.

Are you looking for loud or quiet? Care about interior resonance?

You get that nasty cracking sound from a glasspack. A turbo muffler/packed one will sound much different.

I used a Dynomax SuperTurbo on my old Z71 and it was nice. Mellow idle. Fairly silent at cruise of 2000rpm (very slight drone) can't be heard with radio on. Decent WOT sound.

I have heard the Dynomax Ultraflow before and sound wise it is more like a Flowmaster between the 40 and 50 series under WOT but at cruise it is much more sedate.

I have a Flowmaster 40 Series with DeltaFlow on my new Z71 and a 50 Series "BigBlock" on my F-150. The 50 series resonates much more than the Delta Flow. Only problem with the Delta Flow, its CFM rating is less with the more restrictions...that is why I prefer the straight through designs (plus they are quieter).

The straight through design mufflers tend to resonate much less down the freeway. Also a longer case 18" or more will lessen the resonation even more.

To get more WOT sound (from the muffler) you have to give up for resonation from what I have seen. I have headers on my F-150 with a high flow cat and a K&N FIPK so when that goes WOT it is loud! It sounds great like that. I'd consider a few of those other than a really loud muffler...besides it is better to be fast and sneaky than slow and loud.

Yup Flowmasters sure do drone a lot
I have a 40 series original dumped and a 'homemade' highflow cat and it gets on my nerves sometimes. At first I liked the loudness of it but am very tired of it now. Looking at a Magnaflow (similar design to that of a dynomax ultraflow)

"Homemade" high flow cat...you mean hollow cat? LOL

I am swapping a Magnaflow in hopefully next Tuesday, I am excited needless to say. The sound is very nice on those.

'Homemade' meaning I found a piece of 3" pipe to take its place
Let me know how you like the swap, I've never heard a Magnaflow on an earlier model engine, only the modular 4.6 & 5.4 engines. Gives them a smooth, deep tone.

Ah, that homemade! hahaha

Well it won't be until later. I ordered the muffler from Jegs and takes two-three weeks to get! They have to special order it.

It is 11" wide, 22" long case, and basically huge!

I will post up how I like it.

Damn Dude that's a garbage can jk
I suspect you want it a LOT quieter than it is now.

I just hope that the 14" Magnaflow will be loud enough for my tastes... I'm on my 4th different exhaust configuration in about a year. And I 'sware' this'll be the last time I change it...

I have changed the setup two or three times on that truck. Different headers, cats, and mufflers.

I am going with some long tube Hooker headers probably early June. I also have 2.5" mandrel bent "L" bends for optimum flow and a dual 2.5" in and 3" out y-pipe. I can't wait to go with long tubes and see more torque from my weenie 302.

That Magna is huge! I do have a 3" cutout if I need it really loud. Not totally quiet just eliminate the resonation as best as I can. It is terrible. This muffler came highly recommended by a bud of mine in California.

That will be the end of my exhaust...until I go with a small stroked 351W into a 392 then I will need 3" duals. LOL

When are you gonna go to a Magnaflow?

I need to find a place that won't screw me sideways with shipping... I was gonna get it from Jegs.com but they wanted $50 to ship it up here It sucks living in Alaska sometimes... I usually get my stuff from Summit Racing (great company), but they don't carry Magnaflow. Hopefully by the end of the month I'll have a new system... will let ya know how it ends up.

akford, what part of Alaska do you live in? I used to live in Southeastern.

I have have flows and D.max welded ultra flows on my truck. The flows sound better, but only at idle and WOT. They drone way too much for me. The D.max's sound is totally different, but I like it and they flow a lot better then "dronemasters."

I live in Anchorage but I'm out on St. Paul Island right now gearing up for halibut season. I went to high school at Mt. Edgecumbe for 4 years tho... Where in SE Alaska did you live?

What kinda sound do the Ultraflows give?? Its either those or Magnaflows for me... the Flows vibrate my damn floorboards sometimes.

$50 to ship to Alaska! Holy crap!

I'd get someone to order it in the states, and then reship to AK. I shipped a few things to HI from TX before and no insane charges via USPS.

Dynomax Ultraflo is similar to the Magnaflow. Straight shot with fiber or steel matting to reduce sound. I do believe that straight mufflers (not glasspacks) reduce resonation greatly. But that has to do with case length like 14", 18", 22", 28". Also the length will help keep up the torque up if the muffler is appx the same length as the stocker...

Take Corsa, Borla, and B&B I think too are straight designs. Somehow the resonation is very limited. In case of the Corsa on a C5 Corvette there is no resonation cruising but they have a bad-to-the-bone WOT sound!

I feel like an old man liking a quieter muffler now. Minimal resonation is my first priority, then flow, then sound.

Yup $50 bucks
I just priced out this lil' setup @ Summit:
Dynomax Ultraflow SI/SO: $66
2.5" 90 Degree Mandrel Bend: $22
2 Clamps: $4
Handling: $8
2nd Day Air: about $40

Totaled about $130...
I already got a 18x3.5 SS tip. I'm gonna give them a call after work and see if they can ship air parcel post (cheaper) because I can wait a bit longer if it saves me some $$$. I feel like I'm getting old too... My lil' brother asked me if the new muffler is gonna make it LOUDER!! LOL Oh well... live and learn.
