so i had somebody come pick me up, went and got the cps, and when i got back to the truck, for kicks and giggles i tried to start it before i installed the cps and it fired right up no problems. I jumped in and drove it home, got a quarter mile from my house and she died again. I then installed the new cps and still no start..maybe it came bad from the store, im not sure. I towed it home and i'll let it sit till tomorrow.

I let the truck sit for an hour after getting it home. Went outside and it fired right up. Runs smooth, has all its power and everything..what the hecks going on? Cps's have same symptoms. My fuel pressure gauge says its between 40 and 50 psi.

Check for chafed wires starting at the 42 pin connector on the drivers side valve cover.

its an interesting problem...it runs great and just like i turned the key off, it dies. An hour or two of sitting and it fires right back up. My guess is the new cps i got is bad as well. Im going to buy a new one tomorrow and try that. If it does not work, does anybody have any more idea's? Just changed the oil, did the glow plugs, fuel pressure is good, just changed cps, unplugged fuel bowl heater and replaced fuse, new t 500 hpop. Its almost got to be the cps i would think.

Check the oil level in your HPOP tank.

I have an '02 and my tach does not move at startup, so I am suspicious of using that to diagnosis the CPS.
I would check for cracked insulation on the wiring going into the plug for the UVCH. Mine had started cracking off and causing some issues. I ended up putting some 'liquid tape' on them and all seems fine now. I will splice in a new connector when time allows.
Another thing to check would be to unplug your ICP sensor prior to starting it after it has set for a good while. If this is bad, it will still start and use a default setting to allow it to run just fine - just do not do any towing, hauling, etc.

Good luck,

On the 02/03 model 7.3s the tach does NOT move when cranking, it has nothing to do with the CPS, it's the updated/different dash. Best way to test the CPS is to put in a new Ford/International one.

So, i went out to my truck this morning and it started great. i let it run for a few minutes to charge the batteries from my cranking and shut it off. not trusting it at all, i pulled the cps and reinstalled it. as a side note i should add that i went to four different stores today and nobody had another cps. a few stores couldnt even get one. but anyway, i reinstalled the cps, checked oil, fluids, sensors, checked hpop hoses, checked everythng but the oil height in the hpop. the truck fired right up, i had a buddy follow me to the store and then to a friends house. the truck was running fine and full of power. i shut the truck off, talked for twenty minutes or so, got back in the truck and it wouldnt start. The glow plug symbol came on as it should, i checked the truck for codes with my superchips tuner and found nothing. but i gurantee when i go and try and start it in an hour it will start right up and be fine. Whatever is happening, happens right after the truck gets to its final operating range. When it's fully warmed up. which is about 6 or 7 miles. and then it just plain dies. literally shuts right off. however, this time, i shut it off running fine, and then it would not restart. its seems i just got a bad cps but it has the same symptoms as the one i originially pulled out of it. i'm going to try another cps as soon as i can get my hands on another one. any more idea's guys? i think i've hit all the bases here..

My money is on CPS or IPR then. Get your hands on a Ford or International CPS... If the one in it is bad reinstalling it won't so a thing.

Have you removed the Superchips program back to stock to see if all is well?
Also, would the 6 or 7 miles you go before it shuts down be the time it takes to run the fuel out of the fuel filter bowl - indicating a possible issue with the fuel pickup in the tank?

Good luck

well, it was the new one i took out and reinstalled, i just wanted to make sure i did everything right is all. wierd that it has the same symptoms as my original ones. i guess i'll just have to wait till tuesday to figure it out. i cleaned the ipr about 15,000 miles ago, but if there was dirt in it now, what type of numbers would i be looking for to see what's up with it? i have a snap on scanner that is compatible with my truck and was wondering what duty cycle should look like and that type of thing. i'm thinking i just got a faulty cps straight from the store though..
