Had a rim break on my 92 on the highway.
Had my 92 just less than a year. Never had the tires off yet.
Was driving down the highway and the truck did not sound right. Thought the 4x4 system maybe turned on. Stopped and checked they were off.
Further I drove and it was getting worst. It sounded like a rim coming off the truck.
Stopped and removed the hubcaps and my right front rim was dracked all around the hub.
Put spare tire on. Man I was lucky this did not come off on the highway.
Now I need to find another rim and set of lugnuts.
Found what caused this to be the rim hubsize was too small for the hub on the truck. The previous owner bolted it on and it did not fit over the hub. But was squeezed on that the rim eventually cracked and separated.
The rim hubsize that came off measured 4 3/4" and it seems the size should be 4 7/8th .
I have 4 rims for my 78 truck which is 2 wheel drive with dana rearend. It measures the same as the rim that broke.
So I figure that 2 wheel older truck rims look the same and maybe that 1/8th smaller hubsize. Where a 4x4 is a bit larger.
Man that was a close one. My uncle use to barber at a home for mentally retarded folks. Anyhow one of thier classes thought them how to change a tire. So he was driving like you were and then saw a tire peal off the side of the road by him just before the truck nose dived. I know that sounds a little out there, But i never questioned him on the story.
I guess your going to change the lugs right. The maybe stress where it wont have equal compresion torque now.
i believe that is a chevy rim. the centerhub hole is smaller on the gm wheels, i bought a set of wheels for my dually and they wouldnt fit all the way on so i called the guy and he told me they came off a chevy truck. didnt know there was a difference till then
I bought the truck from a loyal ford guy. The Cheby word is a cuse word to him.
He had several different people work on that truck before I got it.
I had to spend 2 days redoing back wiring for a trailer. Who did it for him put the wiring above the new gas tank he had installed. It seemed to developed lots of shorts on top of the gas tank. It is now routed along the frame.
I changed the battery cables. they were badly corroded.
He had some other guy do a patch and paint of the truck. Looks good, but rust is coming through the cab and there are some big runs in the paint around windows.
I'm finding electrical issues in the dash also. So I got my work cut out for me. I'm new with a diesel truck so I maybe here and on the 7.3 area for help along the way.
I think he thought he was saving money by having a bunch of do it yourselfers. These guys I know some work in shops , but because they did this and no pay took short cuts on him. He did not want to sell the truck, but his wife passed away and he is downsizing his collection of vehicles.
Very lucky....I've seen alloy wheels break like that but never seen a steel rim do that in 20 years in Public Safety. Not even from an accident. Checking that noise probably saved your life and who knows how many others if it would have happened on the interstate.
Was wheeling with some buddies here I northern Michigan and broke an axle shaft right near the piece that the studs press in. It ended up rolling, scraping down a guys pos dodge and crossing a extremly busy intersection. My dad brought the trailer out and we were loadin it up when cops started flying in from all directions. Apparently some idiot had reported that there was a group of kids fighting with tire irons. A night I won't forget and no one was hurt. Thankfully I wasnt going fast, and thankfully you found that before you had an issue!

Yep your right. I got a new rim and tire fixed yesterday. Tire shop confirmed what you said.
Ford and Dodge rims have their symbols or name stamped on the rims. The GM's do not. It was a Bm rim.
Hopefully others will see this and learn.
I now have another 4 rims that I bought and had sandblasted and painted for my 78 3/4 and they are GM rims. My 78 is a 2 wheel drive. Maybe these will still fit since it is not 4x4. Will see. if not I will sell them at aloss of course.
