Hey guys,
I was doing some thinking this weekend, and eventually I will need a new engine.
I'm gonna go up alittle higher and put 44" boggers on her.
So, I'm not sure how much MORE my 302 can take. I was thinking either a professionally (carb) built 351 W stroked or a 460.
I'm thinking maybe the 351 would be cheaper and easier....i could use my Edelbrock heads, same motor mounts, and same trans.
What would be a good stroker size for a 351W? I see all different sizes 392,392,408,418, and 420.
Or do you think I should go with the 460 for reliability issues?
Get a professionally built 460. There's a guy at one of the mudbogs with a 79 f-150 w/ 44" boggers and a 460. He runs 13's in the quarter mile w/ his 44's.
What kind of axles, and tranny etc are you running?
A 392 is super cheap to build. 3.85" crank. Stock 5.5955" 351W rods. 302 pistons. I would go with a nodular iron crank, forged rods, and forged pistons.
My plan for my F-150 is a 392 @ ~9.7:1-10.3:1 comp, AFR-185's, Edlebrock EFI intake, cam like 216/224 .53X lift 114lsa, 1-3/4" headers. Maybe a little spray too. Should make 375-425rwhp for about $3500 total.
A 460 will make way more power if built right. But big blocks are really expensive. Heads are close to $2000 alone. You could always stroke a 460 for over 500 cubes... If you go with stock 460 heads I read that you have to run low compression (under 9:1) due to detonation.
392 is the cheapest 351W based stroke to build. No special pistons or parts. 460 will cost way more but make easily another 75-100hp.
Well, guys, I'm thinking a 408 stroker will do.
I would love to get the BIG block but the budget is the problem. The bigger the $$$ longer I have to wait to build it.
And I was thinking I don't want to loose my A/C either.
I just had that custom C-6 built,Edelbrock performer heads, new motor mounts, and new radiator.
I'll just build it so when I get bored with power, I'll just slap a roots type blower on it.
Will all my 302 brackets for accesories fit on a 351w? Or should I start looking for those now?
