I own a JZA80 Supra and happened to surf by this site. There is some misinformation in this thread but I see allot of very knowledgable people too. I personally like off-road trucks myself over street trucks but the Lightning is an exception. Mustangs are bad machines too. If you want a fast car, get a 5.0. You can run fast relatively cheap. I won't speak for the MA70 Supras(dont own one), but the JZA80's are very good cars. They are certainly not rice however we really tend to draw that crowd in. It has been real bad since the release of that god awefull movie, The Fast and the Furious. The Lighting would crush the 2JZGE Supra. However the two way turbo'd 2JZ-GTE would be a tough one to beat. the best time stock with radials is 1/4 mile in 12.9 by G. Polo. That's impressive. If your not impressed then consider that the 2JZ-GTE can pump out over 912 horsepower on stock internals!!! Thats 912 at the rear wheels! However all this said theres plenty of domestics that can run nines easily. The Supra tends to be a dyno queen. Traction is poor at best and it's very very hard to get out of the tens. Also you'll need 110 race fuel to run over 550BHP. Like the Stang, the Supra has definately earned my repects.
I ran 13's with less than $500 invested in my '97 Eclipse GSX (a hefty 3300 lbs). That was with an intake, intercooler piping, and a new compressor bypass valve (it's not a blow off valve because it routes back into the intake). 15 psi, stock turbo, stock exhaust, even with a catalytic converter on it. There's been guys that have ran low 11's on stock internals, around 450 hp. That's pretty good for a 2-liter 4-banger. In fact, last time I was at the 1/8th, I pulled on a late-90's Cobra with a Vortech supercharger running 10 psi. It was a bad-*** car though, and I think the guy just wasn't driving it right. Actually, he probably would've even beaten me in the 1/4.
I hate rice as much as the next person, but most people don't understand the meaning of the term. A ricer is someone who throws "Type R" stickers on their car, or other stupid stuff in attempts to make their car look faster. Sometimes they talk trash about how fast their car is, but most of the time they just annoyingly rev up on you at a stop light in a ridiculous attempt to race with you (I don't street race though, because it's stupid and dangerous, and the track isn't expensive, plus it gives you proof of your car in the form of a timeslip).
I think something has to be said of the mentality of you domestic guys here. You guys hate rice because they're slow, and they think they're fast. Now do you think I feel when someone with an almost stock Mustang starts talking trash to me? My car runs high 12's right now, and there's not nearly as many daily driven domestics out there that can compete with that as the amount of trash talked on the internet would lead you to believe.
That's not to say I don't like domestics, because I do. The new Cobra is badass, as well as the Lightning. But, just like not all imports are cool (in fact, in stock form, a lot of them suck), not all domestics are all they cracked up to be either. And there IS the domestic version of rice, I know you guys have seen them. Like the v6 Camaro with the SS badges on it, or the Mustang with the euro tails on it. Yeah, I think those are best left to the IS300, which came with them stock. They look pretty stupid on most other cars (in fact, I'd rather my car look relatively stock, that's why I bought it! Because I liked it!). You guys just never had a word for those cars. Let's just drop the ricer crap and call them all posers. The term ricer just confuses people into thinking of all imports.
Last time I was at the track, I beat some domestics, and I lost to some. But I was able to at least keep up with a lot of them. And I drove my car home (whereas most of the cars I ran came there on a trailer). I also like my quiet little 4-cylinder (the turbo's the loudest thing on the car), as opposed to some of these v8's that make so much noise you can't even hear anything.
Fart cans are annoying but so are people who blindly bitch about imports. People need to learn respect. I have a lot of friends with domestics, and some with imports, and all of our cars are generally pretty quick, so we all respect each other's cars. You want to talk **** about my import? Come race me at the track and beat me, and I won't make excuses, I will respect you and your car. Or at least run a decent time for what you've got into your car. A lot of people that race on the street wouldn't be able to drive worth a crap at the strip anyway (I see it all the time).
I also paid for my own car. I hate overpriveledged punks driving their parents' cars. I apologize for being so far off-topic.
Of course, when you drive a truck, you can be proud of it even if it DOESN'T go fast. There's not a prettier site than a venerable old fella in his old Ford that he's babied but given good use.
This post makes me :| The toyota supra is nice, a turbo, wow great and all of that but even though you are comparing apples and oranges. The lightning(theapple) can stump the orange no problem. A supra can beat a lot of things off the line, it is lite and its one of those god awful rice burners you see out there I'd like to run them over with my big pickup but anywayz I don't think that the supra could handle 147 mph, even if you modded it up that fast(unlikely) it would blow apart cuz the metal so dam thin! Lightnings are the best.
i love american escpecially ford, but, i think ide rather be in a supra at 147 then an L. but ide rather have an L for everyday beat things at lights stuff. the problem is that theres many more posures out there then there is people with a fast car, and thats why we get the bad impressions that we do. most kids spend more money on body kits and stickers then they do on making it fast, and continue to talk crap, i can see were your comming from with the whole stock mustang thing but unfortanantly thats part of the "not another one of those" attitude people have taken on.
personally, a fast car is a fast car, i dont care what makes it fast, if you can TALK AND WALK your ok with me.
as my dad stated "when i was your age we spent money on making the car fast, we didnt always care what it looked like, but now a days all kids want are loud stereos, stickers and lots of plastic"
Just curious, about how much torque are these 500+ hp supras putting out? It makes me wonder cause with all that hp how are they keeping the bottom end together?
I don't understand why people even bother with japanese cars in the first place, If and when the break down the repair cost is going to be twice as much as with a domestic car and there are plenty of fuel effecient domestic four bangers if your worried about fuel consumption.
i think the kids buy japanese car because they are cooler and better looking that the american alternatives. The aftermarket has made it cheap for them to modify their cars and movies like f&F made it cool to alot of kids even tho that culture already had a large part in american society. most of the toyotas, nissans, and hondas are made in the u.s.a now anyways. (except for the good ones). I know I would pick a civic over a chevy cavalier anyday but I am not in that market anyways.
i have seen a video with a supra twin turbo on the highway right next to a 92 fox body mustang with a built 306 and the stang was left behind like nothing.
here goes my say a truck is a truck and a car is a car two motors one big one and one small one with teh same power output the big one will last longer all the time. Lightnings are fast but they are still a truck supras are fast and theer a sports car so yes i believe a supra would take teh lightning but it should it costs more weighs less and its entire platform was desingned to do so.
i see what inline is saying. and i have always thaught the lightning wasnt intended to take on high-dollar sports cars. supra was designed for speed, F-150 was designed to be a truck.. then they put a high powered engine in it, & called it "lightning". ford doesnt want to sell a defective product that gets as much attention as the lightning, it has much more potential than from the factory. capable of over 500hp while staying reliable.. just look at the GT. i do believe the supra Turbo has a good chance of taking a lightning, the non-turbos arent very quick however. i know the lightning isnt the fastest vehicle in the world, only fastest production pickup, for now. but i dont get upset about it. the lightnings still a dream to me, ide rather have it than ANYTHING else. even the 390-horse cobra... i couldnt sit still the day i got to sit behind the wheel of one at a re-po auction, turn the key, and rev the engine up... that had to have been a sad man who lost that one.. lol..
