This is my first post, so greetings from the cornfield outskirts of the Rubber City USA.
I have a 1979 f150 w/ the good ole 351m. Looks like powersteering pump is about shot and im looking at getting another. I know certain other parts are interchangeable from the 351w...is the powersteering pump? Thank you, I appreciate all help.
I just did the pump on a '78 with 400M... same engine family. I used a NAPA stock style reman with built in magnetic filter. It was not terribly expensive. Before changing it I ran several quarts of power steering fluid through to flush out the ATF. The pump and new hoses (not essential but recommended with new pump) went in without fuss or problem. Toped it up with power steering fluid and off it went.
To remove and re-install the pulley on the new pump I borrowed a pulley installaton tool.
Ford changed the P/S pump on everything in 1978 (except Econolines and Passenger Cars w/Hydro-Boost, all of which used the Saginaw pump).
The 1978 and later Ford/Thompson P/S pump has a plastic reservoir. The P/S pressure hose has a straight tube w/an o-ring on the pump end.
This hose connects to the pump with a qwik connect fitting.
1977 and earlier pumps have a steel reservoir. The P/S pressure hose threads onto the pump. The mounting brackets are different than what was used 1978 and later with the plastic reservoir pump.
351W not offered until 1981 in F150/350's and Bronco's. Prior to 1981, 351W only offered in 1969/80 Passenger Cars and 1975/80 Econolines.
