Can't set timing, dist. won't turn
Can't set timing, dist. won't turn
Just got my '71 F250 a week ago, but it's got a 460 out of a '76 truck. It's got a 4-spd. and A/C, A/C presently not working. 4WD if that makes a difference. There's a sticker on the driver side valve cover that I can mostly read, it looks like it says at 600 RPM timing should be 8* BTDC. The sticker has columns for both Auto and Manual trans, but all the info is in the Auto column. I don't have a tach, but at idle the timing is currently at 0*. I have a bad dead spot if I accelerate gently at low RPM, but if I give it the pedal it will take off quite well. Sounds more like a carb problem to me, but I wanted to get the timing right before I look into that.
Last night I set out to adjust my timing but I couldn't turn the distributor after loosening the clamp. I didn't want to damage anything so I left it alone until I could learn how to safely break it loose. Anybody else ever run into this?
Thanks.
I just remembered that the info for the timing was for Auto trans in Drive. That's the only info that the sticker gave. I'm assuming 800 RPM for manual trans. idle. I've been having a very difficult time finding the timing info for my application since apparently these motors were no offered in 1971 F250's and it seems very few were put in '76 4WD's. I have a full set of '71 truck manuals but they are no help in this. I think I'll have to invest in a set of '76 manuals.

I had the same problem with my 1990 460 last fall. In addition to the penetrant, I put a large wrench on the bottom of the distributor housing (not underneath the cap, down close to where it goes into the block) and hammered on it with a large hammer, back and forth. Warning - this can break the distributor casting!
Doing this, every night for about a week, I was finally able to get a tiny bit of back & forth motion (keep applying penetrant, the motion helps it to work in). Finally it broke completely loose!
Good luck, and patience . . .

If you're talking about what part of the housing to put the wrench or pliers on, yes, as close to the engine as you can get. You're going to have to check and readjust the timing no matter what.
