Kicking tires tonight, I spotted this thing. It's a regular cab XL model in good shape, a ding here and there, still a rare gem around here. Has 74K miles on it, 5.4 engine, automatic, cruise, a/c and that's it as far as options go.
The only thing that bugs me about this truck it has a huge hole drilled right through the bed, which tells me... fifth wheel. Not necessarily a bad thing IMO but questionable given the motor.
I have not driven it yet only because I'm not sure if I should pull the trigger and my wife would freaking KILL me if I did!!!
This is more of a want than a need deal. I've always wanted a truck like this one, the money is somewhat there but I just have a hard on for these trucks!

A large round hole likely indicates a gooseneck hitch. Regardless, the 5.4 can handle loads much better than people give it credit for.

Why?? B/c it had a hitch installed? The torqshift was specifically build to tow, why would that be a concern? As long as it was maintained properly the tranny wouldn't concern me in the least.
Well I took her out for spin today. Truck had some issues that wasn't sitting too well with me.
I heard a loud whining rubbing kinda sound coming from the rear? between 30-45mph. Wheel bearing going out possibly?
Truck wasn't running on all the cylinders. 6 or 7 maybe. The miss became more apparent as the engine warmed up. The truck was killing itself under full throttle. Severe bucking and hesitation. Triggered the check engine light to flash.
Knocking coming from the front suspension, even everyday bumps and knicks in the road, really annoying and had to fight the steering, especially at highway speed. Even though the tires looked about 75% tread all the way around.
Potential for this truck yes but a bit more than I want to chew right now moneywise. Either a farm truck or a fixer upper.
Stupid question - why is it everytime I test drive a vehicle new or used, it's low on gas?
Try to buy an older motorhome with full tank? With $500 fill ups the fuel might be worth more than the vehicle.
If the seller neglected to fix the miss even for sale, I can only imagine how much more negligence the truck might have.
Keep walking..
