I have a 2010 F250 FX4 with the plow package and 35" mudders on stock steel rims. Haven't experienced the problem yet though the truck does bounce quite a bit over rough highway, I blame the D-rated tires. What speed were you going and what did you hit?
I got it in a '98 Exploder with 90,000+ miles. The ball joints are worn, but "not dangerous" according to the shop. My tire pressures were a bit high. Dropped the pressure and the wobble went away.
Do you have high miles and possibly worn front end parts?
If not, try dropping the front pressure 5 pounds and see what happens. That there would be a "free" and "reversible" mod....the best kind.
be very careful and make sure you put the right parts for your year. mine is a 2000 and somehow ended up with a drivers side half shaft for a 99... it caused all sorts of hell... but got the hub rebuilt with the right parts and now she drives like a 400k miler dream.
Try installing a single or dual steering stabilizer from these guys. I use a single but I will install dual if it comes back. Rough Country Steering Stabilizers
Bought mine appx 16mos ago. F350 CC DRW 4X4. Death wobble got me 2nd day I owned it. I had read up on it and was watching for it. YeeHaaa. Still made the pucker factor go up.
Watch this video. Ford F-250 "Death Wobble" - YouTube
What is your front tire pressure? If you read the TSB, Ford recommends running the tires at the pressure listed on the door sticker. I can start to feel the wobble if I take 15 pounds of pressure out of my front tires.
yes sir... 398,466 on the ticker right now. so not on the nose but close enough for me.
there is a spread of pictures on the "MotorBug" thread in super duty & heavy duty forum. its on one of the first three pages. i will do what i gotta do to help her see 1,000,000.
xtof
I thought Ford put some changes in place with to '08 MY to cure the wobble? Lame.
I'm at 38k miles with my 2010 and haven't had any problems. Since under inflating tires reduces their load capacity and fuel economy, I ignore Ford's door sticker. I run my tires at 75-80psi. Good luck with a fix.
I have owned my truck for about a year. I had the death wobble only once on the expressway. After that it seemed like I'd grip and expect the death wobble, but it never happened again, when on bouncy roads at 45 plus MPH. When I read the title of this thread I knew what it was about before I opened it. About 8 months ago I got new wheels and tires and havent had the same feeling at all anymore. Sure the truck rides like a skate board over bumps and gets a little loose, I can drive it like that though. That, I chalk up to a real trucks ride, sure better suspension components would be an improvement just aint got that far yet. If I wanted the cushy ride I'd have gotten the 150. Dont have any real advice, and niether does FoMoCo. The steering stabilizer even dual setup has seemed to help some. There are a few good write ups on the subject around.
Got it in my '05 F250 4X4 - a new steering stabilizer, and balancing and rotating the tires (285-70-17 BFG AT KO's) and it went completely away. I'm pretty sure it's usually a combination of wear and tear on many different front end components, that's probably why different fixes have worked on different trucks.
