Oil Cooler Questions (Resolved)

Hey, I'm about to reinstall my oil cooler, but I was wondering...

How do I make sure that the caps are lined up correctly with the core? Is there any way besides putting the one end with the groove in the tab and then just eyeballing the other end? I've read a couple of write-ups and the information on this was just a little vague. It it's a tiny bit off, will bolting it up rotate the caps and sort of line it up as you torque it down? I probably should have marked each cap and the core, but you know how it goes with coulda/shoulda/woulda.

Sorry, it's my first time doing this, and I'm sort of nervous about this point.

Nope, doesn't matter, just get the tabs lined up and press it together, be sure to grease the O-rings before pressing together. When you bolt it on the engine it will spin if It needs to. I've done my parents IDI and my reg cab, the hardest part is getting it in and out, its tight in there.

Yeah, I just found out that it'll rotate. It's already pressed together and everything. I just can't get that thing back up in there. Not enough real estate. I have no idea how I got it out. Between the fuel lines, brake lines, power steering lines, and engine and engine crossmember, it just won't go in.

GRAAAAAH! Good Lord, I'm frustrated.

Yeap thats correct, but before you install it, put it in a real flat surface like a glass, and that helps you.

I was asking you to please repeat the same idea but in a different way because I don't understand what you meant the way you said it

Lay it on something flat ...anything flat , like a table , work bench ,the floor,,, or a sheet of glass ...Adjust the caps as needed till the caps both lay flat ...If you pressed the ends together all the way , it will be fine .. THe hardest part is the new front gasket ...

Gotcha. Understood. Too late for that, but it doesn't matter, because the front cap has rotated on me trying to put it in. Just not enough room... Heading back out to give it another shot.

I put a piece of wood across the oil pan and unloaded just a llittle bit of weight with the jack. I dunno if it lifts the engine at all being that there are mounts and such but I got it in and out easy like that and seemed like I couldn't without.

What I wound up doing was that I had to rotate the front cap around so that it would clear where it had to clear. Then, once I had it back towards where it goes, I lined both caps back up. I don't see how else I could have done it while at the same time maintaining my sanity.

Its not one of those fun meter things, that's for sure. Just don't do what I did, I let the front gasket rotate back and when I put the bolt in I missed the gasket hole on the bottom bolt. When I started it up I had a gallon of oil on the floor in about two seconds.

I got the gaskets on there, the bolts in there, and the bolts torqued down. It looks like I'm good. The front gasket wasn't bad at all. The hardest part for me was actually getting the cooler back in the area where it belongs. I had to move a couple of things to make room.

I don't want to do that again with the engine still in the truck ever.

I failed to mention that I had an advantage. I had a manifold leak so I had that off. I have E fuel so I cut the orginal fuel lines and got them out of the way. I also pulled the inter plastic fender well to make it easier to get at the manifold bolts. It was clear sailing and I still screwed up the gasket, LOL.
