I need to lift the 5.8L V8 in my '89 F-150 so I can inspect/clean/replace the oil pick-up screen & oil pump. What all do I need to disconnect from the engine to allow it to rise up? How high must I lift it? Can I lift it with a floor jack against the oil pan or do I have to lift it from above with an engine puller?
You can't lift it from the oil pan, theres no strength there. You have to lift it from up top.
Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Flowmaster Exhaust, Sunroof, Clear corners w/ Diamond headlights, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .
Thats it for now, saving for a stang. Check out my Gallery for a look-see.
If you know anyone with a cherry picker that would help. Plus it would not make much sense to try to lift the engine by the oil pan and then try to remove said oil pan. I would suspect you may have to loosen the tranny crossmember bolts and maybe the exhaust. Just keep an eye out for things that may have too much stress on them or are hitting something. Hope this helps.
Unbolt the engine mountsand tarnny mounts and you can lift it until the tranny hits the tranny hump on the body. Should give you about 3-4 more inches. Hafta use a cherry picker though. Watch you don't stretch any hoses past thier minits though.

I thought I had read that you could lift the engine by placing a piece of wood between a floor jack and the oil pan. Once the engine was up, you could place wood blocks between the motor mounts and frame to keep the engine in the air while you removed the jack and removed the oil pan.
>I've used a floor jack and 2x4 and lifted by the balancer

Don't lift by the balancer, bad idea. The balancer isn't a solid piece meant to support weight...its meant to balance. The Oil pan has more than enough strength to lift on. Use a block of wood, and it'll protect it against denting. Good luck
