Finally getting around to starting up my 55 f100 Straight 6, I had her tore down to the engine block and repainted her while doing a mini over haul on her as I built her back up. All she needs is oil and antifreeze and she’ll be ready!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> <o> </o> I know I put her out of timing removing and installing the harmonic balancer. (Noob…) <o></o> <o> </o> I was hoping you guys could give me some advice before I try to turn the key on her. Things I need to do or look for before I start.<o></o> <o> </o> Thanks Guys.
Why would it have gotten out of time when you R&R'd the balancer? Timing is controlled by the timing chain and the distributor housing rotation. The balancer is keyed to the crank and can only be installed in one position. Unless you had the timing chain off and/or the distrubutor out, the timing should be good for start up.
The distributor was removed, and when i was removing the balancer, the bolt was so rusted on and tight, it turned the engine (or crankshaft) while i was losening it.
Just set the crank at TDC on #1, and insert the dizzy with the cap off, such that the rotor is pointing to where the #1 plug wire is on the cap when the dizzy is all the way in. I think there is even a notch on the rim of the dizzy, where the cap sits, to indicate #1.
Ross has it, it's rather easy, just be sure you know which way the dizzy turns when the engine is running so you set it to the correct side of the cap contact, you want it to be coming to the contact, not leaving the contact.
