I just picked up a 62' f-100 with a 292. I know that the truck is burning oil and was wondering is a common problem that can be fixed with a tuneup or if is in need of a rebuild.... any ideas?
Check the cylinders for cranking compression. All plugs out, carb throat propped wide open, battery with full charge, engine at or close to operating temp. That will give a lot of pertinent information. Label the plug wires so they dont get mixed up on reinstallation. Cylinder numbering begins on passenger side, front one, 2,3,and four at back. Driver side front 5, 6,7,and 8 at back.
Do your compression check as Mike suggests by keep in mind that a COMPRESSION test is checking the COMPRESSION rings, not the oil rings. Altho more that likely if you have low compression you'll bad oil control rings also but you could have good compression and have NFG oil rings.
Does it smoke excessively while driving or just at start up? If just at start up it is probably valve seals and/or guides.
How many miles you got on that Bad Dawg. How much oil is it using?

OR, if it smokes after going down a hill with your "foot off the pedal", AND THEN stepping on the "gas"..... you're sucking oil past the guides....(big-time)
