Hello All
1992 F-150 I6. Last week I replaced a non working starter and a weak battery. This morning I went to run to the store and while driving I noticed the alt dummy light on and the battery charging indicator is a lot lower than where it "normally" is. Do I need to replace the alternator? How do I check/test the alt? A while a go I heard someone say , while the truck is running, disconnect the negative cable on the battery and if the truck continues to run the alt is ok and if it stops the alt is bad. If this true?
That testing method is too simple, and doesn't cosider some of the possible causes. You could simply have a loose ground wire somewhere in the circuit causing this.
