Alternator Question

I have a 91 F150. Just installed new alternator. Took it to Auto Zone and had them run a test to verify all is well. They said, and please don't quote me because I missed half of it and I am engine ignorant, that the regulator is good. When it was ideling he said it was right on. Possibly 15 amps. But then he had be run it up to 2000 rpms and he said that it wasn't high enough. should be at about 75% of peak power and it was only 33 peak amps. Also he asked if the belt was tight. I put a new one on and tightend it at the torsion thingy. hand tightend it a far as i could get it due to the fact that it was the same coming off. I bought but have yet to put on new terminal connections but noticed when I hooked up the battery that one of the cable clamp thingers was cracked. I wondered if this would reduce my peak amps. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

First thing you should do is check all of your electrical connections at battery starter and alternator for condition and tightness because it can definetley affect charging system performance. And if your battery terminal is cracked like you said replace that before installing the alternator.

You may also want to check your engine to body, engine to battery, and body to battery grounds. Take them loose and clean them off with a wire brush and sand paper.

I agree. Tight grounds are a KEY component to getting things charged and keeping power up. Loose connections make things erratic and kill electrical devices. Just quickly go through and make sure everything is snug.
