Sheared Head Bolt, w/pix

Sheared Head Bolt
<O</O
Since I have owned my truck (12 yrs) it has always had a sporadic slight water usage. I have just lived with it, but had to keep close watch on the water level. Over the years I have changed out the water pump and radiator hoses. It would also push water into the over flow reservoir then suck it back in after the engine cooled down.
<O</O
So this weekend was the big project… time to pull the head. One bolt, 4th from the front driver’s side, was just setting loose in the hole, already sheared. The light brown discoloration of the head/block mating surface was just aft of the broken bolt.
<O</O
As I write this the head is loose but still setting in the truck. One of the two exhaust manifold nuts only backed out a couple of turns so I soaked it with PB blaster over night. I am going to try and lift the head with both manifolds still attached.
<O</O
I have located 6 new head bolts locally, p/n Dorman 675-131, and will try again Monday morning when more parts stores are open to locate more. I was surprised that <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com</st1:City>Napa doesn’t carry them.
<O</O
I am really dreading the drilling and easy out operation scheduled for today and if anyone has any comments that might help with this project, I am open for suggestions.
<O</O

Please don't use an EZ out. If it breaks, and they often do, even a machine shop will normally not touch it.

How do I remove the broken piece of the bolt that is still in the block?

With the rest of them removed and head off, you "may" have enough bolt left to weld a nut on it. Barring that, a left hand drill bit will often back them out. One thing for sure, if you break off that EZ out, things get worse. Good luck.

I think it is broken off below/into the block, not sure just held the bolt up to the side and guessed.

I don't have any left handed drills, will look for some on monday.

Normally an air powered "engraver" will turn these out.

Slow and easy with a left hand bit. I always drill a smaller pilot hole first. Right or left it don't matter here. Than with the bigger left hand one when it gets a hold slow and easy with lots of down force she will back right out. UNLESS the broke bolt was to long to start with and bottomed out. Than it would be mashed into the bottom of the hole and very hard to get to move. Do not drill all the way through the bottom of the bolt for this reason.

Feel my pain update

First off... thanks for all the helpful ideas, I will get some left hand drills bits tomorrow.
I was able to finally get the head out of the truck today, hard to do working alone without a ENG hoist. The valves passed the solvent test without any leakage to speak of so i will check the head for warping in the AM.
