I own a 74' F-100 with a 390. It will start up in the morning when its cold just fine. after it runs for a while or i take it on a drive and turn it off it wont start again. The starter wont turn and it makes a terrible noise. The battery has enough juice but it seems like the starter is getting hot from the headers. That would be my guess. Has anyone had this type of problem and if so what can be done to fix it? Is it the starter or something else?
yeah the heat is killing your starter you will have to replace it soonner or late, to stop this from happening again make a heat sheild for the starter with some sheet metel
It does have a sheet metal cover but i have heard that it might be a Cut Rate starter. That could be part of the problem. Yea i thought about wrapping the headers, seems like a cheap and quick fix
My 390 with headers does the same thing. I have a heat blanket on my starter and it still only lasts 1 year or so, next time it's out I'll try to add a metal heat shield. Be sure to get a lifetime warranty starter, then it doesn't cost you anything the next time...
try getting a high torque starter. along with a heat shield or starter wrap. summit racing has one for a 390 made by PowerMaster. part number:PWM9506 for $199.95 and it's rated for motors up to 18:1 compression. and it has 200 ft/torque.
