Fuel sending unit replacement
Fuel sending unit replacement
Good evening, I have finally gotten my 93 Explorer back on the road. Now I have a few things that I am trying to get fixed.
The first things that I need to get repaired is my Fuel Sending Unit replaced. How hard is this and what kind of pitfalls am I looking at.
The problem that I am having is that my fuel gauge is never right. The other day I ran out of gas, but the gauge said full. Go firgure.
Anyway I have been told that the problem is my sending unit in the fuel tank.
So is there any advise on this repair.

I've found for this repair that a Chiltons or Haynes is a good resource for the basic step by step. Autozone has free access to Chiltons (if you register with their site) if you want to go that route, or see what your library has.
Basically, you drop the gas tank. Then remove the sending unit/fuel pump assembly from the tank. Installation is the reverse of removal.
Every time I've dropped the tank, the hardest part has been disconnecting the fuel lines from the fuel pump, in part because I've always used the cheap fuel line disconnect tools. The last time, I bought a more expensive angled set, and the fuel lines came off in the first couple of tries.
And, obviously, it is easier to remove the tank when it is nearly empty, so drive it until you are reasonably sure that it is fairly empty.
