I have an 89' F-700 with the 429. It has a crack in the block, oil is milky and won't hold any water in the radiator for any amount of time. Clutch is starting to go, but 16 foot dump bed works well. Scrapping it would be over a grand plus some money from a new tire on it. Would it be worth replacing the engine purely on the money end if I can get a complete engine and swap it in myself? Also, is there enough demand to making parting it out worth it?
Not really sure what to do with it yet, what do you guys think?
If you are looking at only $1000 as a part-out or scrap, I'd at least look for a motor. Check out post 12 here for a source, $2100. Now he had troubles with it, but the outfit is standing behind the motor according to the later posts:
I know it has to be either the 370 or 429 heavy duty to be a relatively easy swap, and I am looking for a used motor for probably no more than $600. It has already become a money pit, so it has to be relatively cheap. It is a personal use dump to haul gravel (1/2 mile driveway) and brush, so it isn't as urgent as the guy in the other post.
To rotun it currently has a carb 429, but a fuel injected would be nice, but I don't know how the electronics would work swapping to efi.
Better off staying with the carb setup, easier to find the motor with the right heads and cheaper too if it's used only for what you stated. Even the exhaust manifolds are different for the carb engine and are easily found as opposed to the f.i.
Its a gamble.. I dont know what a truck like that is worth in Kentucky. I did sell an excavator in the mid - west about a year ago for almost double what it would have gotten over here in Seattle. But Im not sure if the med duty truck market is as demanding as the heavy equipment market??
If you're not invested at the moment, honestly, I wouldnt advise putting any money into a truck like that.
Just pull the scrap money and the tire value out of it, and if you need a dump truck for the farm, buy one that will hold its value better.. Diesel...
There are a lot of medium duty trucks for sale around here, lots of cheap options that run, so I don't think it will sell more much of anything. I'm probably going to put it on craigslist for a week and see if anyone wants to pay more than scrap. Tires are shot except for one that has less than 50 miles on it. Most likely going to scrap it and sell the tire.
