Leaking Oil Plug

Fellas,
I just did my first oil change. Now my oil plug is leaking, it wasn't before. I can even wiggle the plug with my finger, doesn't seem to be seating tight at all. Anyone else have this problem? Hate to drain out my new oil, but looks like i might have to...HATE OIL LEAKS.

Thanks - any input appreciated.

if not already done, make sure the composite plug has been turned all the way to the stop.

also how much oil has leaked? Sure its not just leftover from the change?

some say cost (i doubt) others say reliability. I heard of one guy who was off road and hit a rock with his composite oil pan and cracked it. lost most of his oil, duct taped it together to get back to the road, then towed it home. Makes sense, metal dents, composite shatters.
Ive got metal. And the drain plug has an o-ring vs a copper/nylon/aluminum type crush gasket. So if the o-ring was damaged or removed somehow, it would leak. I suppose this logic is same for composite as well, as it is o-ring dependent as well.

That being said, to the OP, i heard of a way to remove the plug without losing all of your oil. Basically use a well powered shop vac to create a suction in the system. Unscrew the oil fill cap, and place the running shop vac over the opening. This wont suck out the oil, but it will create enough negative pressure to prevent all the oil from spewing out. you will hear a gurgle and that is normal. pull the drain plug, inspect, replace o-ring, re-install.

Personally i havent had the guts or need to try it, but it supposedly works.

Afterthought, maybe this is a good way of controlling the oil spills when doing an actual oil change....hmm

I have the composit pan and plug. Looks just what is shown on Epic's video. its not leaking much, maybe not even a drop or 2. Put you can see that it is wet aroudn the seal of the plug and using a napkin can wipe oil off. Also, i can move the plug around with my finger, its not in their tight. It is turned all the way to the stop. I may need a new O-ring is what I am thinking...

Thanks!

I'd call my dealership and ask them what to do. Do they want to tow it in at their cost or you drive it there to fix it and give you a free oil change to replace the fresh oil you just put in there.

I did the vacuum cleaner trick on either my 04 or 06 when installing the Fumoto drain valve; it worked.

The LAST time I used one of those oil change shops (aka greasemonkey) on my 2000, they stripped the plug! *#$ idiots! They used the shop vac trick to keep the oil from draining while they installed a new plug. Works! They maybe lost a couple of tablespoons of oil was all. The also lost a customer! I got over being lazy and have done every oil change since!

My 2011 has the composite pan and plastic plug. In three changes, plug has never leaked. I always clean up the plug with WD40 before I reinstall, clean as a whistle!

jammer

Interesting! What a great idea...if needed. Definitely a 2 person operation...with a steady hand on the vac!

Because the drain plug is leaking and it shouldn't. Why should he have to waste the fresh oil he just put in the truck?
