Been getting ready to change on my 02. I have the Ford non posi. I read someplace that Ford says your not supposed to change the fluid? Does not sound right to me. Does any one make a gasket for this? Using rtv to seal this has allways seemed odd to me, i did it on my old Ranger but never liked it. Thanks Joe
If you never have submerged the rear axle in water, then you shouldn't need to change it. However...if you feel better after a change...then go for it. I changed mine at about 100k...and I feel better about it.
Here is a question, I have read that How To, but the one things I am not sure of is I am a fan of Mobile 1 products, but can you use the Mobile 1 differential fluid since it has the limited slip additive if you don't have limited slip?

Yes. The additive is just a friction modifier and it is a small amount.

I changed my rear diff oil around 35k or 40k miles. Its not going to hurt anything to change it. The sterling 10.5 in the SRW trucks uses 75w-140. Since you don't have a LSD you don't need to worry about the additive, choose an oil you like.
There is no gasket on the diff cover. Some sealants will leak oil. I recommend picking up some Permatex "Right Stuff" it is what I used on the 4 diffs I've done on SDs and it seals great and cures nice and firm like teh OE sealant. Its worth the extra $$$.
Yes this is one of those things that make you wonder. Why no drain plugs from the factory? And why no gasket?
The idea behind not having a drain plug from FORD's standpoint...is so the gears can be inspected.
Found this gasket for the Sterling 10.5. I have no direct experience...but looks like good quality. IMHO...I actually prefer the no gasket option and use the RTV. Just a preference...because we don't really need to change the rear gear oil that often. In extreme use...maybe the gasket makes it easier.
