Help With shift bowl (pics)

O.K. I have no clue why, but the previous owner has replaced the shift bowl on my 72 Ranger.

Some thing is clearly not right, either is is the wrong bowl (it came from napa and says simply "ford trucks" on the package he threw in the floor.) of the stering tube needs to slide up (which looks possible, but I'm not sure that's the right thing to do)

The turn signal switch housing is rubbing the steering wheel as well. I'm assuming that there is a misplaced spacer some where and that the slop (side to side) in the wheel could be fixed with the "upper and lower bearing kit.

If it is the wrong shift bowl, where can I get the right one, its not the same as a 3 on the tree I guess?

(Tranny is a c-6)

He probably used the 3 on the tree shift collar. it should sit about an inch lower on the column. the shift tubes are different between the auto and manual trucks. The 3 on the tree collars are usually the ones on the shelf at the parts stors. You usually have to order the auto collar, since the wear slower than the manual collar. I'd bet he used to wrong one.

no, you have the right part. the pointer for the automatic indicator is not present on teh 3 speed part. what i see is a misassembled unit. my bet is he did not remove the tube to assemble this and the bolts that hold the turn signal switch housing are either missing or they are not hooked in properly. you need to remove the column and make sure it is assembled per the shop manual. hawkrod

I agree with Hawkrod. It looks to me like you have the right collar.
Have you checked the cab mounts? On my '70 f-100, when the cab mount rusted out,and the cab nosed over it pushed the steering column up. That caused all kinds of problems!
When I took the steering column out of the cab (to replace the mounts) I noticed it had a lot of north-south travel in the steering shaft it self( the tube stayed where I was holding it)
Just a thought.

The cab mounts are o.k.

I pulled the top part apart and it was indeed misassembled. I would however like to pull the whole thing out and replace the bearings and such (which I have new ones) and have it painted.

Any tips? It appears that if I remove the clamping plate form the engine compartment and the seal from the inside there is enough room to pull the shifter arm on the bottom end through the fire wall?

The factory manual is somewhat ambiguous.

O.K. Got it out and apart.

Anyone have any clue where to get the tab which snaps into the shift tube and operates the neutral saftey switch?

PO broke it and the pieces are why it was not fully seated..............
