Anyone know what the pressures should be? I tested all 8 and get 75 to 80 pounds. I got 2 dead cylinders and i have spark at the plugs, im gonna put a new set in and hope that clears the problem but i doubt it. Thanks, Don
You should see somewhere around 150 psi, engine hot, throttle open, dry. You're seeing what I would expect from an engine that had not been run in a while.
Well, i been driving it since i got it about a month or so ago. I did not open the throttle plates, will that make a huge difference? I think it is probably good that all cylinders are close in pressure
ok, well long story short. When I bought the truck I didn't notice that the previous owner had put a non venting gas cap on so one day when the temps got up a little out here in the Mojave desert the pressure in the tank became high enough to force Gasoline past the carb. needle and into the intake. Here I came alone and when I tried to start it up I thought I had a dead battery or a dragging starter not realizing it was Hydrolocked on Gasoline!! Im out there pecking on the starter (old trick for sticky starters) with a small ball-peen. Then I hooked up a jump start so I had A LOT of amperage forcing the engine to turn......OHHHHH.....THE THOUGHT OF WHAT I DID MAKES ME CRINGE . IM A BETTER MECHANIC THAN THAT!
Anyway, i finally got the old girl to rotate and when I saw gasoline and oil spewing out the filler tube I knew what had happened.
So now it has a miserable miss, and actually, I believe it had the miss when I bought it so Im just not sure if I caused damage or it's missing for other reasons. I did find a bent pushrod on #1 Cylinder which I straightened and this help it a lot. Number's 5&7 cylinders seem to be dead but they both pressure up to 78 & 83 PSI (spark plugs fouled and oily). Im going to put a new set of plugs in and see what that does.
When your truck was built this is how they diagnosed problems. Hopefully you have a vacuum gauge but if not they are not expensive. Save your money on plugs unless they are worn. Just use brake clean or carb cleaner to get rid of the oil and clean up the old ones. If you put in a new set and you have another problem your new plugs will be fouled. Also is the color of the residue the same on all cylinders or are only 5 & 7 oily?
Have you checked your timing? Force rotating hydro-locked engines is not good for them as I'm you know. Damage to the timing chain and/or gears is not uncommon.
Hey thanks for the vacumm chart ill check that. I dont think i bent connecting rods since the engine purrs other than that miss. If i can get some things arranged im gonna pull the engine and trans. and rebuild them both. This is a great truck and having a miss in the engine is like a pretty girl with a bugger on her face...haha. thanks for the good advice and help guys i really appreciate it.
Ok guys im stumped. Numbers 5 & 7 cylinders are dead even though they have fairly good compression (105 psi), good spark and i believe the intake gasket is good. What am i missing?

Good spark measured where? Swap a good cylinder plug with #5. If no change then try the wire. Check inside the distributor cap wire sockets to make sure that there is no corrosion on #5 & #7. Did you hook up a vacuum gauge and compare it to the chart?
Just a few questions . . . sorry if they seem dumb but I'm just basing it on what you have told us.
Yes i have swapped plugs, i bought a couple plugs to try and have also ran engine with plug laying on grounded surface and the fire looks really good. Possible to have burnt leaky valves and still maintain decent compression numbers? Sorry but no vac gauge yet, im working on that.
Oh, has electronic ignition put in by previous owner. Thanks for helping me brainstorm, This really has me stumped.
