I have finally finished this project, and I thought some you you fine folks on here might find it interesting.
CPL Toolbox for hand tools, Delta with drawers for bench stock and long tools, 3 stage air compressor set for 150 psi, 12 and 24 volt jump system, lockable box with expanded metal top and bottom for cables, hoses, and large tools. CPL is mounted on drawer slides to pull out over the tail gate. The whole thing sits down over my goose neck ball to keep it from moving.
I like it. Some paint would be nice. What kind of work do you do?
Do you think those sockets might jump off the pegs when you hit some rough road?
Do you tend to work out of the truck daily, or will you use a lift to set this off at a worksite? Since you call it a skid, I thought you probably unload it frequently.
If every thing works out like I think it should, I will tear it down next winter and have it blasted and powder coated, but for now I will be using it raw.
The beauty of a CPL box is that when the lid is closed (and latched) it will prevent both the sockets and wrenches from coming off the pegs. I own a small trucking company and will use this rig for recovery/repair operations. We do ALL of our own repairs so you never know what you will need in the field. I also do custom combine and irrigation motor repairs in the growing and harvesting season, thus the need for a 24 volt jump start system.
The skid will live in the shed unless I have a job, as with the price of fuel it makes no since to haul it around when I don't need it. In fact, the reason I built it was because it was taking me an hour to load my pick up when I did need to go out on a call.
The thing is pretty heavy, more so than I had thought when I started building. Pretty sure I over-built the frame by quite a bit, but I managed to use only scrap that was around the farm from old projects or tear downs for the main frame.

That makes a lot of sense. What is in the steel box with diamond plate top?
The large box actually has expanded metal for a top and bottom so sand and water can work right through. It is simply for lockable storage. Jumper cables, air hoses, grease gun, tow straps, pry bars, tire tools and hyd jack right now. Oh, and my big hammer, can't go out without my big hammer. :-)
