I have a 1974 Ford f 250 I recently had some rear end troulble. I had the drive shaft rebuilt and balanced . I replaced the 4:10 gears with 3.73's and I had the pin that holds the spider gears in welded becauce this is where my trouble started when the split pin broke allowing the pin to fit the pinion gear. My problem now after repairs were done I have a vibration when taking off but goes away when the speed gets over 20mph.
Can anybody tell me if this is a rearend problem like not having the proper clearances of a drive shaft problem? Any help would be appreciated
Keep it over 20MPH! Sorry, couldn't resist. Somebody might come along and help, but this is the early Ford truck forum. You might want to post in the forum for your specific year. Best to you.

Vibrations can be a real pain George. Fortunately you have a low speed vibration which is usually easier to diagnose. You can start with frequency. If the high points match the wheel speed then that would seem to indicate that it would not be pinion or prop shaft as they would turn 4.10 times faster than the wheels. That would get you into the areas of wheels and tires and probably not wheel balance since it goes away at 20 mph. I'd check to make sure that you got the wheels on straight. A bent axle shaft or wheel or an out of round tire are other possibilities?
