Spare tire indent

OK, I've seen a few posts about an indent on the rear fender for a spare tire. I have read the they didn't start using it until 1953, however I have an original 1951 and I have the indent. Has my bed been changed or is this an actual option? I can't find anything on the web that shows or talks about it.

Not an option and not original from the factory. Likely a conversion made by the dealer, a body/repair shop, or by one of the previous owners. Indentation in the fender for the spare is not common, but has been done and found on other 48-52 F1 trucks.

Thanks, it looks like it was a factory made option. I wish I could post a picture of it. But I am sure that it's either a bed from a later year or it's a custom made job. Either way I think it's coming off of the finished truck.

Looks like a regular "after the fact" modification.

Thanks again Ilya. You are helping me a ton. Hey did you ever get a chance to get photos of the front hood trim?

I have one that looks exactly like that. Absolutely a spitting image. It's done so well it looks like a professional job. It's not farmer hacked at all. Seeing a twin, I wonder if there was a kit available or something back then?

It really makes me wonder. The original owner of my truck was in Idaho, and I wonder if it was something offered to the farmers as their chance of a flat was higher. It's just frustrating that I can't find any information on it. I've even tried accessing the Ford photo archives to get a better idea of its originality or if it's modification.

Welcome to FTE!

I've always thought that's a very convenient place to keep a spare. Even though it's not used often, it's still much better than crawling under the truck. Of course it might be in the way if you're trying to load or unload the bed from that side...

I agree. I thought about putting mine there but can't bring myself to cut a fender to do it, even with the PO cutting a hole in the back for the taillights (I will be adding a fuel door in one though).

Moe I might have a fender that's already cut for sale here soon. I don't know that I want that look on my finished product.
