I'm down here in south Texas where it's scorching hot most of the year. I know the manual calls for 80W/90 gear oil, but I'm contemplating going with a heavier blend...85W/140. Does anyone object to the notion of using a heavier weight oil? There will definitely not be any issues as far as cold weather is concerned. I'm anxious to know your opinions on this...

I don't see any harm in the heavier oil but little benefit assuming its not full time full wheel drive. The front diff should only be turning/working when hubs are locked and 4 wheel drive is in use. For most of us that means occasional low speed work. If that is your situation, really no need for the heavier lube.
Now if you are racing it off road, different story. For max life in that situation, you might benefit from an even better lube: xx-140 synthetic.
The rear, especially if used for sustained high speed or towing, can benefit from the heavier and/or synthetic lubes in hot climates. That is what we did with my daughters Jeep Cherokee before loading it to the roof, hooking up a trailer and driving from Ill to San Diego in July: 2100 miles, 2 1/2 days, turned 100k on the trip, 105F temps and lots of hills. The little Jeep ran 70-75 and never wimpered.
