Hello i am new to this site. I am not really much of a mechanic so i cannot answer questions that are very specific. but anyways there is a 1978 f250 at a dealer about 2miles away and i was thinking about buying that and swapping a cummins engine into it ill need all the help i can get, so be patient with me i have alot of questions.
1.Can i just put the 5.9l cummins engine in with the factory transmission?
2.How much can this cost low end, great prices for the cummins engine and truck.
3.Will the suspension and axles handle the weight of the diesel engine or will i need to purchase somthing to enchance suspension?
4.Is there any guides out there that can make this simpler on me?
5. What kind of gauges will i need in the cab of the truck.
6. There are alot more questions i just cannot think of them at this moment.
Please answer all you can i also have 2 brothers that are overly qualified to do anything on any diesel engine but i do not want to ask them until i absolutely need to.
hey bud,get a hold of fordcummins.com they have all the info/parts you need i am going to be doing 1 for my self this year also 79 f250 they have the motor mounts, trans adaptors every thing
That site certainly seems to have a lot of parts for sale.
This is going to be a VERY involved swap, especially for someone who describes themselves as "not really much of a mechanic". While they say their kit takes most of the hassle out of doing the swap, there are always going to be 10,000 little things that don't "quite" work they way they're supposed to.
Go on their site, and read their installation instructions to get a much better idea. If you aren't comfortable with the procedures, you should really think about whether you want to do the swap. Nothing sucks more than starting a project and not finishing it!
the biggest thing to worriie about is notching the front crossmember about 2" to clear the front pully i think i talked to steve he had a pic or 2 to show the work done any good welder should be able to do that if you have lots of cash they will do the install also for about 6000 or so my reason for installing the 12v is #1 i got the whole truck for 1000 #2 better millage/power pulling my 11ft camper/boat combo #3 should be able to get most of the investment back its a good match and i am waiting to get started for sure
