Allright, my Ford Ranger is leaking oil and rattling. It is probably the flex plate and the rear main seal. That is probably gonna cost me 400-500$ in repairs. I am also gonna have to replace the front shocks also, but I can do that myself. So, that will be another 200$ and I need to fix a few other things after that.
It has 190 000 KM on it. Body is still very nice and not too rusty appart from the door bottoms and box U joints. Chassis has some rust, but not too bad. Does not burn oil. I am just losing it because of that leak. Does not burn antifreeze either. Just loose some after two months, but that is probably nothing to worry about and a very slow leak. Balljoints are real nice also. Rear shocks have bee done and so has muffler except cats.
Question is, should I still keep this truck or not? I really do like it.

The coolant sipping over a couple of months sounds like my then new 99 4.0L was doing. Took the Dealer & Ford 3 years, dye in the coolant, blow down tests, new heads & gaskets & Finally "revised" head gaskets in late 02, to finally run down & Fix the problem, all under warranty I might add!!!
SO, if you come to find a head gasket problem, make sure to consider using the Ford "revised" head gaskets. Mine is still leak tight 10 years later, so it was worth the 3 year tongue biting I went through, waiting for the Dealer & Factory to finally run the problem down!!!!
Some head gasket thoughts for pondering, let us know what you find.
I really don't think it is the head gaskets. I don't burn any. My exhaust is not wet and does not smell like coolant. I don't even have the money to get those replaced.

Your truck has 114k miles on it and is pretty good shape.......did you buy it new?....it doesn't sound like it is done to me...........I am not sure where you live that front shocks are $200 just for the parts.......rockauto has MC OEM for aboout $35 each........the flex plate and seal is about $50.......see if you can find someone local shop to drop the tranny for you. maybe you can help them......and get it done for $200 or $300.....even if you are selling it with a rattle and a RMS leak.you might be better off paying to have it fixed and then selling it.........

Mine would use about half a qt in 6-8 weeks, exhaust didn't smell sweet like coolant, pipe wasn't wet, both the pressure & dye test were negative, but it still was sipping coolant, even after the factory replaced the heads. "Revised" head gaskets finally fixed er up!!!!
My 98 XLT has 190000 and survived two sons using it in college. Original 3.0 still runs well, 4 OD trans replaced in 2007 with 5 OD. It needs some other TLC and updating but it's not worth much and it is nice to have a truck around when needed.
If it runs and serves a purpose do the minor repairs and keep it.
I bought the truck in August 2011. So, it hasn't even been a year.
Yes, I did find a Mechanic. I am very manual when it comes to work on pretty much anything, but I just don't have the tools and enough knowledge to change a seal and drop a tranny without killing myself.
I will get it checked out in about two weeks by a guy I know that fixes cars sometimes. I'll ask him to do a compression test.
Hopefully it is just a main seal or valve cover gaskets (those I could do with my buddy. It aint too hard).
I will keep you all posted with what info the mecanic gives me in the upcoming weeks.

I can last longuer than that. I bought the truck in August and filled the fluid in March. Maybe it is because of the cold that small openings appear. My cousin who studies in car tech told me that.
So, I will fill the rad up and the overflow tomorrow and see how long I can last.
Who knows, maybe the headgaskets were replaced by the revised ones. I will never know tho unless I start searching for the first owner.
My buddy came and we saw some interesting things. A fitting on the rad on the side is very gunky. Must be my leak right there. I wiped it down and will check later.
Tranny level has gone down. Must be the tranny seal.
