I know this issue has probably been beat to death, but has anyone heard of any type of class action suit regarding the leaking head gaskets on the 99 expeditions? Mine started leaking at 33,000 but about 6 months past my warranty and surprise, Ford and my dealership told me to pound sand. I've heard of too many people suffering through this issue for it to be "normal wear and tear". Anybody know of any such case? THX
i am having the same problem. just courious what did you do?? i cant afford the get it replaced. looking for alt solutions. any help would be great. thanks
Well, I like you, will probably do nothing as I cant afford the 2 grand to replace the head gasket and I really cant afford the new engine that the Ford mechanic said I will likely need as replacing the head gasket is a short term fix. I explained to Ford Customer service (oxymoron) that I was happy with the vehicle except for the fact that it started leaking oil probably at less than 30000 miles (I currently have only 50k on my 99). And as you have probably found, they really didnt care. This all happened after they soaked me for 100 bucks for "diagnosing the problem" that I had already figured out. Anyways, I will get down off my soapbox. The key point is that I, as well as you and every other individual that is in this quandry will sell our vehicles to others who will have to deal with it and in the end everyone will see that Ford doesnt back their products and they will be out of business and some Japanese company will be right there to take their place. It will be a sad ending to an American Icon but well deserved from what Ive seen. Ok, now I will really get down off my soap box. would love to hear any ideas you may have.
Changing the head gaskets is a PITA. I guess i am not aware of the inpending head gasket issues. My 98 seems OK. Was this a head gasket change or did it have to do with the PI heads on the 99+'s?
Im one of the lucky ones, mine leaks so little that the worst part of it is the smell of the oil burning on the exhaust manifold, but I've heard horror stories from others who werent quite that lucky. I guess the big issue is the lack of support from Ford. I didnt expect them just to take care of the whole thing (although since they identified a manufacturing flaw, it would be appropriate) but they wouldnt even pay for the parts for Christ sake. It wont be a surprise when they go out of business unless there is a huge philosophical change in backing their products. I would LOVE to buy American cars, I keep going back to them every few years to see if their quality has improved but theres no comparing them to Hondas, Mitsubishis, etc as far as quality and standing behind their product is concerned.
