I am pretty sure all Ford Ranger motors are overhead cam.
I can't find my LMC catalogue, so I cannot give you that X code meaning. But, a brief description or picture can tell me if it is a 3.0 or 4.0 liter motor.
EDIT
The Ford Ranger 3.0 motors and 4.0 motors both have cams. No pushrods, rockers or lifters.
thanks it's the 4.0 pushrod engine. sounds like frequent, timely oil changes is wise due to rocker arm and pushrod tip design.
it's got some pep I find myself haveing to let off the throttle quite a bit.

Oh, I forgot your's is a 94. So yea, cams were not that popular back then I guess. I am not an expert.
But yea, donnot neglect oil changes since you have lots of moving parts in the heads.
Yes, the 4.0 motors do have a good amount of power, but the 3.0 and the 4 cyl. 2.3 liters sucks. They are slow.
