Your truck already came with a stock cold air intake from Ford. The stock air cleaner assembly had a snorkel on one end with a vacuum motor bolted on it that would alternate between bringing warm air from the exhaust manifold and cooler outside air as the engine needed it. One hose connected from the bottom of the snorkel to a shroud around the exhaust manifold for warm air to prevent carburetor icing and improve better cold weather driveability. Another hose connected from the end of the snorkel to the radiator core support (beside the passenger's side headlight) to draw in "cold" outside air for better fuel economy and power.

In order to do a cold air intake your going to have to have some sort of closed air cleaner. You can either buy an after market cold air intake system or pick up a factory one from a junkyard. Or I guess you could cut a hole in your hood and do something like the old shaker hood.

Cold air intake requires that the air cleaner be closed off to under hood air so it can pull air from the outside. Me personally, I would find a snorkel type air cleaner like the factory one and hook that up. It'd be cheaper than an after market setup and probably work just as good.

Anytime you can get fresh, cool air to the engine the better off you'll be.

Like stated above....the best way to do that is the factory system as it not only brings in cool fresh air during normal operation but it gives you warm air during warm up...something the carbs love in cold weather.

There are ways to create a box that will pull in air via a scoop. The problem you have to be careful of with a set up like that is you are not pulling in all the water/rain that will simply saturate your air filter.

I would recommend finding a factory air cleaner with the snorkle. If you're worried about the looks, you can paint them or even go all out and have it chromed. Or you can build something you think looks better and run a hose to the front like factory. I think that would be better then the scoop option....You don't want to be pour water down there.

I think theoretically you might get a little better due to the cooler air, but I doubt you would see it.

Not sure what you mean by terrible mileage now. It's a truck so it's not going to get good mileage. If you are getting below average, then it's probably due to it not being tuned right.

Well sucking off the cowl is probably better then a normal scoop. I would still be worried about water getting in there. There are probably ways to prevent it...just think about it.

Look at that picture...imagine your truck is parked in a rain storm and that entire plenum gets filled with water. Would have to think of a way to prevent that.

That car probably don't spend much time sitting in rain storms Let alone driving in one...

there's lots of ideas for cold air intakes for a carb setup. Just do a search on google.
