Just got home from a three hour trip towing a Cherokee. Mileage tanked about halfway through and it was on empty when we got to the gas station. Rear wheel was smoking pretty good, and it was obviously really hot. The brake pads still have plenty of lining left, so I don't think they were dragging. What should I be looking for when I tear it apart?
Looking at the same prob with 146k on the truck. But I smelled the brakes, and after making sure it was me and not the trash truck in front, I got out and checked. Had a little smoke and that wunnerful smell of dragging brakes. Same thing you smell in the mountains when peeps ride their brakes all the way down.
Anyway, got the caliper off and, sure enough, one of the pistons is stuck. I'll drop the driver's side also to make sure they're not both dragging. Never had this truck in the water so it seems odd.
Well I'm thinking it was driver error, and the ebrake was still barely set. Pulled the caliper off and all was well with it, the pads, and the guide pins. Only other thing I can think of that it could be would be something with the bearings in the hub.
