i have a 1985 f-150 with the 300 4.9 strait 6 with the dual port offenhouser intake holly 390 4 barrel and dual outlet hooker header. it has been sitting for about a year, i maybe drove 4 times in that year at about 10 miles a trip. im workin on my other pickup right now so i have been driving this one for about 3 days now. today i filled up with 87 octane with 10% ethanol witch i never do i always put 91 in it. anyways i drove about 5 miles parked it for about an hour, drove 3 miles parked it for about 30 minutes and then drove about 1/8 of a mile and it had no power all of a sudden and only goes to about 1000 rpm's with my foot to the floor. even in neutral. my buddy said maybe i jusped a gear on my timing, or maybe gummed up the carb. i have no clue what happened, any ideas?
Well to begin with...the 300 I6 engines don't have a timing chain, they are direct gear driven. To skip a tooth is very difficult to do and would proably have some teeth missing rathern then just jump a tooth.
You can check it by getting the engine on TDC on the compression stroke and see where the rotor is pointing...should be just before the #1 plug.
X2 on the carb, or maybe bad gas or filter. If it's been sitting it could of picked up some gunk from the bottom of the tank when you filled it. Maybe check the fuel filter. Unplug the coil, pull the fuel line and have someone turn it over to see if your getting good fuel flow. I'd stick the end of the fuel line into some kind of clear container, just to keep it from getting all over the place.
But it's not unheard of to have the distributor gear strip or wear out to. You can check that the way 82f100460 said.
BTW, what ignition are you running, the DSII? Could also be the controller box or pickups in the distributor.

That sounds like a good path to go down. Another quick check is your choke....sounds like your engine is either starving of air or fuel.
