Anybody ever change their trans cooler from where it is?? Mine was behind the AC condenser and swapped it around to in front of the condenser.....more air should make it better...right?
That should make the trans cooler and the air conditioning hotter.
Mine is a V-10....last time pulling my 5th wheel over a steep long grade....it show trans overtemp. Was going to install another cooler and decide to move the cooler from behind the condenser to the lower left front corner of the condenser to get more air.
Any other problems with this??
A much cheaper alternative is a Tru Cool auxilary add-on. For their 4739, which is probably more than I needed, I paid something over $100 and installed it in about an hour or two. I tow a large fifth wheel in the heat of summer, and even up long grades, never even came close to dangerous tranny temps. I highly recommend it.
Speaking of being on a budget, this plate style setup cost me $12 at the local junk yard. After flushing it out and a new mounting kit ($10 or $12 bucks) and 6 foot of new trans line, I was in business.
I put a couple plate coolers similar to the one in fbh31118's photo in my previous tow van. It had a beefy FI'd HT383 engine and a TH350 trans. Without a locking TC, keeping the tranny cool when climbing Donner Summit in the summertime was, umm, challenging. And there wasn't a lot of grill space to add more coolers.
So I stacked two of those and put a strong puller fan behind them and mounted under the floor. With no fan, they didn't do much at all, even though they were at a steeper angle than shown in the photo. With fan, they helped enough for the rig to get by until I put in a built TH700R4. But not as much as if they were in grill getting 60 mph air rammed through them. I'd wager the two underneath would be about as effective as one in the grill.
And even with a fabricated "deflector shield", I worried about rocks getting kicked up into them on fast gravel roads.
In summary, better than nothing! But with the SD, I didn't have to resort to it. I have the stock '99 V10 cooler (the big one), added the loop through the radiator (which '99 gassers did not have originally), and then have one of the plate coolers from tow van mounted between condenser and radiator. Keeps things well under control even on 120 degree days. In front of condenser would have been even better, but the 120 degree day thing resulted in condenser getting priority!
The main reason that I put my junk yard cooler on the front of the condenser is simple, it was easy . That small area of trans cooler didn't affect my a/c one bit. I did however comb out the entire condenser and pick all the bugs and stones out of it. I would bet that nearly a quarter of the fins had been bent over or stuffed full of bug guts and little stones. I think this spring I'm going to make a screen for the front of my truck. Opening all of that area up had to increase air flow some what.
