hey guys...havin aproblem...just got ahand me down laptop thats kinda old but wireless capable....it says that my wifi is connected but i cant get online....all it has on it is msn explorer but when i go through the start up pages it never connects...so i cant get online to download any firefox or windows 7 or anything updated...so..im wondering what would be my easiest, quickest way to get online? i think my wireless is set as default but im not real sure how to check. any ideas? thanks guys!!
1. is there a switch around somewhere that turns the wireless on and off?
2. When you start it up do you see any kind of icon in the bottom right corner that looks like it's looking for a wireless connection?
- hover over anything like that to see if it gives you a clue
3. You should be able to open control panel/ wireless and set up some stuff.
I don't remember exactly what right now.
4. Do you have security set up -- some just won't connect unless you set them up. Newer ones ask for a password.
Also, since you can get on line somehow, google around with the model number, and/or check the manufacturer's site. Often the manuals are available for downloading.

You don't say if it is Windows XP/Vista or 7 so I will assume it is XP since it is old..
Open a Command prompt window by typing CMD in the Run box at the bottom of the start menu..
If you get a reply then you are connected to the internet and maybe there is a static IP set..
Next goto Control Panel
Open Network Connections
There should be one connection that says connected..
Right click on it and select properties from the menu.
There will be a list of things beginning with Client for Microsoft Networks
Go down to Internet Protocol TCP/IP
Click on Properties
Make sure the buttons are check that say Obtain IP address Automatically and the same for the DNS option below..
Another thing to try is plugging in the laptop to the router to see if it works that way.. The networking portion of Windows could be messed up from spyware..
Why not do a clean format? Solves any and all problems and start fresh.
sorry i dont even know what that means. I apreciate the help guys...im gonna find acomputer guy and see what i can find out. I know zilch about computers
