upgrade an open diff?

Is it possible to convert an 9" open diff to a Trac-Lock by replacing the "Hat" and installing new guts? (i.e. a Trac-Lock master rebuild kit)

Figured since I have my 3rd member torn apart I might as well entertain all options.

and if so has anyone done it?
I know I should just go out and buy one but that's not how my rat brain works.

That'd be the redneck solution. I'm going for a level slightly above that. It's still gotta be drivable around town without bucking like a ill tempered mule.

We installed a "miller" locker in my friends Toyota and its worked great for a long time and its strictly a desert vehicle. But for street use I would suggest a Eaton or Detroit locker, Trac locs are ok but not ideal, if you don't mind the rear end being locked in full spool then buy a spool for it.

Look up a product called Powertrax. I think they're made by Richmond. They replace the spider gears in your open carrier to make it function as a locker. You can install one without messing up the mesh of the gears so they don't have to be re-setup. I have one in my '67 mustang. It works well, but you will hear it clicking as it unlocks in turns.
