Rough sound coming from front right wheel when driving.

Hello,

My 2008 F-150 recently started making a funny noise from what seems like the front right wheel.

The weird thing is that it will only make the noise while accellerating. The second i take my foot off the it stops. Also, the sound stops if i put it into 4WD and does not happen at all in 4WD.

It has nothing to do with turning or breaking. It only makes the sound in 2WD while my foot is on the gas.

The sound is kind of weird. It sounds like something is loose, and it sounds similar to tin vibrating on metal.

At first i thought it may have been heat shielding rubbing on something, I checked under the truck and fround nothing loose.

It's weird that it only happen in 2wd yet in the front end.

Someone had mentioned that it may have something to do with the fact that there is no torque on the front wheels in 2wd and when i put it into 4wd it put torque on it, whatever might be loose then becomes tight.

Anyways, I was just curious if anyone has experienced something like this before. I don't live very close to a Ford Dealer, and am hoping it is going to be covered under warrenty. Once I get some time i can bring it to get checked but was hoping someone may know the problem off hand.

Alarming yes.

Read here to diagnose then solve the issue (it's some part of the 4x4 vacuum system).

As scarey as the noise is, it's not too hard to repair...

Wow! It sounds like that is most likely the problem. Thank you so much. I know where to start now!

Your vacuum has a major leak and cannot hold the high vacuum, so the 4x4 partially engages under acceleration , vacuum in the system drops, hense grinding noise of 4x4 trying to go in partially. Some clamp the vacuum, goes to 4x4, problem solved, replace the IWE or solenoid.

Welcome. As the 3rd owner of my current truck I inherited that issue myself. I ended up having to replace both IWEs and the solenoid, but have had no issues in the 35K miles since. Here's a thread on the IWE replacement if you need it (DIY can save hundreds of $$ in labor), and some assorted parts pictures.

It turns out, this was exactly the problem! I had a leaking solenoid and one vacuum hose completely ripped off... somehow..

Thanks again!
