I am running a JWVB now however I am sure they will not swap them if I decide to go that route. I will hopefully find out tomorrow what I can get one for. I am still not throwing out the option for a rebuild with a quality 3disc and some upgraded clutches. The most I am going to tow is 8500 3-4 times a year.

197,000.... as said above, new seals. New oil and filter. Have you thought about a 6.0 tans cooler?

I just installed a 6.0 cooler and a magnifine filter yesterday and wow the new cooler is huge. I flushed the Trans and replaced the internal filter 8 months ago. It's supposed to be 79 today so on my way home from work il be able to see how my temps compare to my old coolers. If I can get some help from someone I may just pull the Trans and replace the seal. I talked to ford and they gave me a price of $1187.00 in labor just to pull my Trans and install the HD4r100, wow!

My transmission on my 2000 Excursion (7.3L, 4X4) is dying rather quickly. Slipping very badly when first start the truck, and kind of shifts like how my wife would drive a manual transmission...

This gets better after 3 minutes of driving, but, who knows how long that will last. At any rate, I've had it diagnosed, and the codes being thrown off are 'internal problem', 'clutch issue', etc. So, basically it needs a rebuild.

I'm interested in getting something better, looked at John Wood, and if I lived closer to him would be very interested, but, don't want to have to go through shipping transmissions the 250 miles (twice since I'd have to ship back my core). If I understand correctly this HD4R100 should be found at most Ford dealerships (or in the least could eventually be picked up at one if ordered?)

I've seen the following regarding part numbers, and really not sure how to read it, but, I hope I'm reading it incorrectly, because it seems to imply that there isn't one available for the 2000 Excursion, only 2001 and up:

Would the one ending in TRM-1622 work for me? Or would TRM-1620? Or none at all?

I called my local dealership's parts department, and they didn't seem to know anything about this transmission. I know the old rule that if you get someone who doesn't seem to know anything about what you're calling about, call back again later and get a different guy... but, could it be because once I told him 2000 Excursion, that this simply won't come up at all because it can't work in a 2000 Ex?

Any info/advice is appreciated.

Not sure where you're located but 250 miles to ship a tranny is not that big of deal. I just recently bought a JW Towmaster and there are no words to describe how awesome it is!! Had it shipped from his place to Washongton state. It was $4700 for the tranny and about $390 for round trip shipping. Plus the piece of mind knowing what you have behind the motor is priceless.

When the trans in my Excursion broke, I limped it over 530 miles (almost 9hrs away) down to John's shop in Holtville.

250 aint nothing! That's like North LA to Holtville, or Scottsdale Arizona to Holtville. Three and a half hours tops!

I agree, the first few months after I had mine installed it flared at the worst times.

I had a Sonnax/Tricumulator kit installed fall/winter of 2006. Once everything settled in, I never had that problem again.

Knock on wood, almost 250K later, my HD4R100 is still running strong and standing up to the power of ACs, a 38R, and a Gearhead Chip.

Well, that's certainly an endorsement!

I'm paranoid about limping this thing 8 miles, let alone 250, and you go and do 530.

At any rate, got in touch with John Wood, he definitely knows his stuff, and nice guy to chat with too. Unfortunately he's got a bit of a waiting list now, so, wouldn't even be able to get it done for a few weeks, and of course there is the matter of the extra $2400 over a typical (not upgraded at all) repair job I've been quoted so far. Then again, it really does seem like I'm getting a heck of a lot more for that extra $2400...
