Oil Pan Question

Hello FTE Friends,

I have discovered a persistent leak on the newly rebuilt 351W!

This particular engine was donated by a 1978 E150 Van.

The persistent leak originates from one rivet (most lowest rivet) - I think those are rivet? It is near the dip stick provision on the pan itself.

I have been searching for a new oil pan with no luck at all.

I would like to replace the oil pan with something that will work properly and most important fit underneath without causing clearance issues. The sump is located near the back of the engine / pan and it does not have a front "bump".

I have contacted the major vendors in search of this oil pan and believe it or not - there is not one out there! I find this hard to believe but so far can not disprove.

Please help me locate this oil pan or an oil pan that will fit - with the dip stick provision - would me a wonderful thing. Otherwise, where do I make provision for the dipstick if there isn't one on the pan? I'm so frustrated and disappointed.

On another note...

Does anyone have instructions on how to put back together the internal working parts of the door, vent & door glass mechanism? It's the 2 piece (vent glass & door glass). That's another nightmare for a novice like me. My wife and I spent nearly 4 hours attempting this install and we were not able to accomplish it.

The muffler shop awaits...

Paul

I think this is the oil pan you're referring to. I posted a pic of this in one of my old threads. I am positive I got this image originally from ebay. Go there and search for that year range econoline van oil pans. There should be at least one listing for it there.

EDIT: Or is this your oil pan? Chrome plated, but what the hey!

Stock oil pan? A welder who knows what he is doing can stop that leak. Unless of course the rest of the oil pan is rusted. Even if the pan is plated, it can be repaired.

The 1956 shop manual has a decent write up on the door assembly.

Thank you Doc...
I've been searching Ebay left & right...
I get hits with most oil pans being for Mustangs.
I wonder if there's anything out there the just fit?

Thank you Raytasch...
I wish I were in your nickothewoods, sounds like there are welders that know what their doing! sigh

You want a welder that can do thin metal. Check out some of the local muffler shops.

Check those "rivets"
this is the pan I bought 1991 Crown Vic 5.8
The rivets on this are not rivets, they are allen head bolts that look like rivets.
maybe they can be tightened? This new pan has a cork gasket between the sheetmetal and the cast piece for the dipstick hole.

Even if they are rivets, you can drill them out and replace the gasket, then go back with bolts, with lockwashers and LocTite 271. You really, really don't want them to come apart!

Hi Ross! I just wanted to clarify, these bolts I mentioned are threaded into the cast piece, no nuts. Still don't want them to come loose though!

Clean it real well and use JB weld. I stopped a leak on a oil pan with a hole from a rod. Never had to pull the pan.

The chrome one is for the 460 engine, will it fit a 351?

Could also tack weld the new nuts on the inside of the pan too for a little more peace of mind.

I'm gonna guess that you need the one pictured in black there. In those years ('79-'87) the Vans, Pickups and Broncos generally shared the same oil pans for the particular engine (this case a 351W). I have that same pan on my '83 351W in my '69 F100. My '83 engine was out of a Bronco. The old 351W I had in it was out of a '79 van, and the pan was exactly the same.
The 351W pan is for a 351W only! The 302 and 460 pans are all different, may look similar, but will not bolt up.

Hope this helps.

So dano, you have this pan on your 69 f100? I have a similar looking pan on my 72 and was looking for a replacement along with a pickup tube. My block is a 79 with 69 heads. Do you recommend a 1 piece pan gasket or can I sleep at night with the cork style 4 pc?

mnewbolds: Did you notice this thread you're responding to...is almost TWO years old?

Something else you aren't aware of: The info in post 12 is wrong!

351W's were not installed in F150/350's & Bronco's until 1981, so the 1975/80 Econoline pan is not the same.

Was avoiding starting a new thread to avoid someone complaining about it. Also I am aware that 351w did not come in these trucks. Mine was swapped in as well as many others who have also done it. Thank you for pointing those things out to me.
