I couldn't sleep last night, so I turned on the TV around 3am and saw an infomercial for a product called "Z Max" that is an engine additive. It is supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread. They had Carrol Shelby and AJ Foyt hawking it, and both claimed they used it in their race and custom vehicles. Apparently it's parent product was originally designed for piston engined aircraft and claims to clean carbon deposits off the valves and the engine in general. This stuff comes in a package with a bottle of fuel treatment and tranny additive also. They back it up with roadside assistance (should anything go wrong with your vehicle) and all kinds of other guarantees. All for 39.95 + s&h. Anybody heard of or tried this stuff? Just wondering.
Hey, my roomate and I were watching TV too at around that same time and we saw that same commercial. He was telling me how he thought that stuff must really work considering AJ Foyt and everybody else who was advertising for them. I tried my best to convince him it was snake oil, but then again he uses some STP additive in his oil anyways. Some people...
z-max won the law suite...also it is sold at pep boys...i don't use stuff avail. to the public...i get synergyn's oil additive and use it in my engine and tranny and transf case this oil additive one gets at the racing shops or performance.....this additive is synergyn's additive package in a bottle it is and excellent additive...

Not really a win, but they didn't get slammed too badly, either.
Z-Max and the FTC settled the fraud complaint with Z-Max agreeing to pay out a total of one million bucks in refunds to people who previously bought the product. Also, Z-Max was required to slightly re-word some of their claims and to specifically include the phrase "by virtue of reducing engine deposits" in several others.
But you are right with respect to Z-Max not having to admit any wrongdoing in the settlement.

That's a commont settlement condition. The fact that they had to give refunds (and that many people were asking for them) and change the wording of the ads speaks volumes.
I used it in my ford windstar. WHAT A MISTAKE! the tranny strted slipping real bad and had nothing but trouble after that. unfortunately ai couldnt fing the reciept. DON"T BUY IT!!!
