Sounds like you're on the right track.

And the mechanical fuel pump does not need to be pumping for the carb to squirt fuel from the accelerator pump. It is just a little diapragm that takes fuel from the bowl and squirts it through the passage and out the nozzle. As long as there is fuel in the bowl...it isn't a problem.

This in fact is what you're doing when you pump the accelerator pedal when starting it. You are squirting some fuel down the throat of the carb to give the engine some fuel to fire up. Without this, the engine has to rely solely on vacuum to pull the fuel from the carb...which when your trying to start it...there is no vacuum.

When running, the accelerator pump give the engine a quick quirt of gas to increase "rev" it up. Once at a higher rpm, the vacuum and increased air flow through the venturi maintains the increased fuel flow to keep up with the air flow and maintain a constant fuel-to-air ratio

On my 76 dentside 2bbl the accelerator pump stroke is adjusted by the link that pulls it - look careful there's several holes in the end opposite the pump itself. You pick the top hole for more accelerator pump, lower ones for less.

Mine was gunked up so I ran some 0.020 fishing leader through the passages and blew out the gunk with carb cleaner till it squirted out the two nozzles.

I need some help though
lost the plunger.
Does anybody have one apart? Would you measure how long it is and post? A .22 bullet it perfect diameter but too short. If somebody would measure one and post i can make a piece. New one comes in carb kit but the darn kit is $40 locally amd i lost that piece . (had too much help)

EDIT oops i see i got in wrong thread will repost in other one.

thanks, old jim
