Wendy wants to know "Why is the console on her 2012 truck have so much wasted space compared to my 2009 console?". Both trucks are XLTs but I have a ton of room once the lid is opened but not her truck. Chris
My XLT has the front bench 60/40 with the middle seat that can fold down into an arm rest / console with very small storage. Does that describe one of your trucks?
Some trucks have the front captain seats that offer a larger console area. Does that describe one of your trucks?
I agree. I rather fold down console that was in the 2009-2010 models. It was just like the 2004-2008 consoles and had much more room. The fold down console in my 2011 is way too big with that head rest and doesn't have near as much room as the previous models. I also think it is a little too high as well. I wish they would change this back in future redesigns.
it has to do with "improved safety measures" from what I can gather by looking at it. The '04-08, and aparently 09-10 have the lap belt for the front middle passenger. The 11-up has a full shoulder belt which requires more space for strength and the retracting mechanisms. I've taken the headrest off mine. There is a lockable console in the seat bottom to make up for the lack of space in the fold down console.
Upon further inspection-I now see why there is less room. It looks like they have used it for the retractable seat belt strap. Where my 2009 has an older style lap strap. Now one would think that if the truck has four doors and a large a bench seat in the rear that a lap belt would do the job but I guess USDOT made them do it. Also the XLT that Wendy has does not have a lower console lock but I found the square hole made for it, you get the lock with a higher package. I might be able to order and install. Chris
All a lap belt is going to do for someone in a head on collision is cut them clean in two. I have actually seen this personally and I thank God that they finally put a shoulder belt in. I want to smack people upside the head that put the shoulder portion behind them.
I prefer a "real" belt for that third seat in the front over some storage. Safety first.
Now if you don't need that third seat - you can always get the console. That will have the extra storage.
The full console is what I have also. That thing holds a lot of stuff. The flow thru console on the higher end models is what will keep me in an XLT. Not enough space and the cup holders are just poorly placed for my tastes.
