radio trouble

No, I did not pay the list price of $76,000.00 plus for the truck. I am in Ontario, Canada. The 2011 F-250 Diesel Lariat is pretty much loaded except for the Navigation unit. I paid $59,000.00 for it. The dealer wanted about 4 grand more but I had the CarCost wholesale unit numbers including hidden dealer kickbacks so I definitely got a good price on the truck compared to others. I negotiated and had the box-liner, mud flaps, 3 free fill ups of diesel and the first oil change free. I have the dual alternators, upgrade rims and tires, upgraded seats, etc, etc, and I have the sticker price that lists all the options in my truck. Black Metallic paint which looks great when shined up, which is almost every day and Adobe lower and wheel lip trim. I also didn't pay any tax as I am First Nation and so don't pay the tax. Part of the Treaty Agreements with the Government.

Back to the radio problem. The code when checked back in January 2012 by the dealer showed a resistor problem. Right now the new radio started doing it again April 24th but it is very intermittent? Hasn't only done it a few times but sometimes two or three times in an hour, then sometimes not for a day. I am actually starting to wonder, and I will check it out, as the weather is very nice and sunny and not doing it? So if I don't settle this with the dealer in the next few days, I will check to see if it is weather related? The first radio that was replaced was not weather related.
Gas mileage is great compared to my previous 2002 2500 Chev with the 6.0 litre. The Ford is getting about 11.4 litres per hundred. For you living in the U.S. the gallons comparison is different but for a big truck that is pretty decent in my mind. Here is a breakdown of my F-250 from Dec. 2010 to May 2012. (16 months) Tranny problems but fixed with a flash, 4 thermostats (under warranty...yea the truck has 4) and the radio problem. This is my first Ford so they need to impress me with reliability. Otherwise, love the truck and the power is great.

radio trouble

Well, it is not the weather affecting it. Had 3 days of nice, sunny, weather and it cut out a few times yesterday for about 2-3 seconds at a time. I also got another recall notice, for the NOx sensor and PCM (12B33) which I noticed some of you are talking about already. (2nd recall)

Gee, 18 months, 2 Ford recalls on the 2011 F-250 Diesel, and on top of that the original tranny shifting problems (finally fixed), the warning display and when brought in replaced 4 defective thermostats, and now the 2 radios having problems. Seems I am spending way too much time in the Ford Dealerships for a $60,000 vehicle. Now I am thinking I should have got the extended warranties, or perhaps might have to consider getting rid of the truck. My Dad says sell the Ford, too many problems for a new vehicle. I like the truck, but don't like spending my hours at the Dealerships. I have driven for many years but this is my first Ford, and I am beginning to wonder what will happen in the future with this truck?

radio trouble

Not just the satellite is affecteed but the FM/AM, CD, and Bluetooth are all affected. Sometimes complete loss of sound for 2-3 seconds, othertimes I hear the bass but not the higher sounds. With the bluetooth I can be talking to someone but miss some of the conversation with the loss of sound. The dealer said the code showed a defect in the radio and that a resistor was acting up. First radio back in January it would take an hour for it to show up. This new radio that was installed late January and started acting up April 24th doesn't take the hour for warm up and can do it right after first start up. So it is definitely not solar flares or even the weather because it can do it anytime and no pattern to it. My dealer hasn't called back since my follow up call on Saturday and here it is Wed so I am going to guess they are going to say not under warranty. I will contact them before weeks end and if not covered, well, I won't be a happy camper and they will know it.

In my most recent Crutchfield catalog I noticed that they have aftermarket radios that will work fine w/ SYNC. Here's a link if your interested:

Car Selector

Just enter your vehicle and they'll show you the ones that will work, and if you buy from them they will ship all the necessary adapters and wiring harnesses needed along with detailed instructions with pictures for the install. I have used them several times over the last 15 years or so. Again good luck with whatever you decide to do.

OP, sorry you are having issues but don't lump everyone into the same category. Selling the truck and saying that ford makes a bad vehicle is pretty drastic. There are a large number of solid performing trucks out there and one truck with a couple of manufacture defects does not mean that ford is a bad company.

I support your decision to do whatever you want, it's your truck, but I don't support the idea that ford is not a quality truck manufacturer.

x2.... great truck. great manufacturer. but like any machine, things are not always perfect. especially in mass amounts. as much as we would like it to be. if they were perfect, warranties and technicians would not exist.

radio troubles

Dave...thanks for the link to the radios that support sync. I will be checking them out.

And for the record, I didn't say or imply Ford doesn't make quality products. There are a lot of Fords that fall within that category as great vehicles. What I did say is that so far, the truck is spending too much time at the dealership for a new vehicle. When or if you end up spending excessive time at the dealership for repairs you believe shouldn't be happening, your opinion may likely change too! This is my first Ford truck (and Ford vehicle) so first impressions mean a lot. I realize problems can exist on any one vehicle but so far, I am beginning to wonder about the truck. My comparison measure is my experience, and to other vehicles I have had as well. I love my truck. Lots of nice things about it. What I don't like is after 18 months and 75000 kms. (46,500 miles) to have my time in the shop replacing or fixing things that shouldn't need fixing yet. I need to have confidence in her, like a wife or girlfriend, if too much trouble time to change her. Now, I am not there yet but am beginning to wonder about her, the truck I mean.

Good news. I called the dealership this afternoon and the service manager thinks it might not be the radio, since this is the second one in less than 3 months, and if they replaced it would be the 3rd one in what....40 days!!
He thinks it might be an amplifier??? and is willing to try that and replace that at no charge. Guess the techs can figure this one out and hopefully, not over several visits.

And tomorrow I go to the dealership in town for the latest Ford recall with the NOX sensor. A 1 and 1/2 hour job I am told. And if not raining, will probably wash and shine my baby again. I have to admit, she sure looks sharp when shined up.

Lundman, we're all good. I just can't keep my fingers from typing. The good folks here at FTE are here to support you for sure and that's all I am worried about. Again, sorry for your troubles and I hope your issues get resolved painlessly.

For whatever it's worth........ Coming from an Electronics background (21yrs Navy Aviation Electronics) The common point is most likely the Amp. all goes throught that and it governs sound quality.
Good luck
