Help, Joe
Joe, I still don't what partial year I have. As you noted, " Engine serial number beginning with 0896812 denotes the beginning of the 99.5 engines."
My number is 0992119 which say it's late, but as others have noted in my post the build date on the door jamb is Mar 99 and the sr # sticker on the engine has a date of 3-29.
So what do I have? Early or late '99??????? By the engine it looks like late but by the other data early? I dunno, but I sure hope you do.
John

Go by the serial number, not the build date. The 1999.5 was probably just to denote a difference between the engines, not to specify 1/2 way through the year 1999.
Taken from posts at The Diesel Stop:
"My first Superduty was built 10/98 making it 99 anything built after 12/8/98 was considered a 99 1/2."
"In fact, serial number 0896812 is the first official "99.5" PSD"
