Ok, seems like I have seen that explorer 8.8 rear ends will work on our trucks? I would assume that when they are on the explorer they are over the leaf spring? So they would work over our leaf spring? Like an axle flip. What is the story?
Yeah, sit on top of the springs in the Exploder. Plus the Exploder has a weird angle on the leaf spring so you will need a major wedge or reweld the perches to get the driveline angle right. Not sure on the width, maybe a little narrow.
Why even consider an 8.8? I mean, ya can swap out the chunk for different gearing in about half an hour.
Try that with an integral carrier.
Because they are easy to find, cheap and a good rear end, you can get them with disc brakes. Plus if you need a limited slip they can be had for a lot cheaper than a 9". If you foresee a need to be swapping gear ratios, then yeah, stick with a 9"
I had a 3.73 8.8 with limited slip and discs that cost a buck fifty at the junk yard.
