I am looking to purchase a 92-96 F-150. I was wondering, what are the engine options? I know there is the 300, and the 302, but are there any others that were optional?
Also, what sort of mileage can I expect to get from each engine? Is there one that is better than the other?
Thanks for your time.
The choices are those two plus the 351 Windsor. I don't believe the 7.3L diesel was available on less than an F-250 chassis. You get a choice of automatic or manual transmission with the 302 and 300, but 351 trucks are stuck with auto.
I have the 351. Fuel economy is about 10-12 MPG estimated in city, 14-17 highway. The 302 and 300 have marginally higher numbers from what I hear.
The 300 is well known for it's rugged reliability and longevity. The eights have higher output ratings than the six. I believe both V8's of this vintage were also good for cracking the passenger side exhaust manifold... anyone please correct me if that's wrong.
I don't think there is much difference in MPG of the different engines. Mine gets about 10-12 city and 14-17 highway also. 17 is really taking it easy and not having a head wind, then just maybe on the low side of 17.
I have a buddy who has a 92 Flareside 4x4 with a 351 E40d and 3.55 gears with 31's. He get's an AVG of 15, I get about 19 with my 1993 2wd 302. The 300 get's about the same as a 302.
OK, HOW (???) are you guys getting that kind of mileage out of a 351? My 351W gets 12mpg on the INTERSTATE. I doubt it's doing better than about 8mpg in the city. So what's the scoop? What're you guys doing that I'm not doing?
Somebody please tell me how you guys are getting mileage like that out of the 351W. Mine (F250 supercab, E4OD) is getting like 12 on the INTERSTATE, 7 or 8 in town. What am I missing???
I DO have a topper, and the truck is standard cab...maybe it contributes for my own situation but I don't know about those other guys! I also maintain the engine meticulously.
Well when i first got mine and i loved the sound of the v8 I was heavy on the gas everywhere and i got 7 to 8 around town. But now that i have slowed down some it is around 12 also. I am not saying you drive fast or anything like that but that is my own personal experience
Well, it is very possible. My grandpa gets an average of 12 with his '97 460. But I can almost bet he doesn't gun it alot. I know another person with a 460 but his truck is a 1 ton crew cab long box. he gets about 8.
I also have a 351 F-150... I have no exhaust on it (just a straightpipe - sounds better that way) and a K&N air filter. I am getting average of 15 MPG overall - I get a little over 18 on the highway. Put the tailgate down, keep the windows rolled up, and make sure to keep the speed below 70...
Thats how I do it. Maybe I just got a lucky motor, though
There is no doubt there are cherry engines out there. And it could be that the divetrain has very little resistance too on trucks that get better than average mileage. A big part of it is how much your truck weighs. A 3/4 ton extened cab 4x4 truck is gonna weight alot more than a little 2x4 F-150. But, I know that I even have a hard time getting 16 on the highway around 55mph. And you know how hard it is to drive that slow! I usually average about 14-15 on the highway. Before I bought my truck I was looking at another one similar to mine except for the year. It was an '88 with over twice the mileage and not as good of condition. The owner claimed 18mpg. Same engines, but mine felt like it had more power. I kinda wonder if he was exaggerating or not.
The only choice you have is the 300-6 302 and 351 v-8s. I have the I-6 300 and LOVE...absolutely LOVE it. It is one of the best engines Ford has ever made. They are used in a bunch of Fed-Ex trucks with over 300,000 miles on them(My uncle works for Fed-Ex). They have 7 main bearings vs. the 8's 5. I have a 95' with 101,000 miles on it. I do not burn much of any oil, I do not have ANY leaks. Well maintained, this engine will last 200-250,000 without a problem. My truck has a 5 speed in it, and I tow a snowmobile trailer in the winter up some nasty hills. I had 600lbs of sand, the 2000lbs inclosed trailer, plus some gear and that truck did not even flinch. It has excelent low end torque, all of it's power is below 3500, making the most at 2. I get about 18-20 mpg on 3.55 gears and 235/75/15s. The 302 V-8 does not make much more power than the 300/6 and I havn't liked the 351W a whole lot. They are known for an exhaust gasket leak and are gas hogs for their power output. My dad has an 88 F-250 with 126k mi on it and is already tired(it is a 7500lbs truck however.) Another plus for the 6 is that there is a lot of room for working in and around it. Everything is pretty simple and makes it nice to work on. The only bad thing I know about the 6s is that the oil pan is no good, they rust out, so watch for that. Hope that helps :-)
Oh, and I forgot to mention, I can put my truck in gear, at idle, and crawl up some pretty steep hills off road. At 500 rpm, with 3.55 gears, that engine pushed my truck up some decent hills, even spinning a tire here and there. At 35mph, in 4th, or even 5th, at 1200-1300rpm, I can push that truck up a decent hill w/o it bogging much, using only about a inch of throttle in 5th and about 1/2 inch in 4th. In 2nd gear at 10 mph, at 1000 rpm, I can chirp the tires, even with the limited slip. Kinda cool eh?

I have a 1995 F-150 with the 351w. I get 15 MPG in the city. I do the regular servicing (fuel filters, spark plugs, etc.) and take my time when pulling out. I also have a topper which helps.
