while I get my drive shaft yoke sorted out, I was cleaning the gunk off the bottom of the truck and tranny, I noticed 1/2 inch or so of play in the tranny output shaft, whatever its called. this is a 1953 f100 ford-o-matic. this seems excessive to me but even at my age, I'm new to a lot of this. I've never had one of these open and can't really imagine what could be broken based on the ford truck 48-46 parts book. Is it time for a visit to the tranny shop? Any one know of an honest one around Rowlett Tx?
The tranny output shaft bearing is the bushing inside the tailshaft. The yoke is the rotating part of the 'bearing'. If you have this 1/2" play with the driveshaft yoke removed, the play is normal. If you have that much play with the driveshaft installed, it is too much play. Plan on replacing the bushing and seal, not a big job. I figure if the seal is leaking there is possibly too much slop in the bearing. If no leak, the bearing, bushing is ok.
Jeff - say no more. Some play should be kept to one's self.
Don't worry, I am not like that, I love this forum because I don't feel like I have to wash my hands after being on here. Not many out there like that. Glad I am a part of it!
